Looking For an Xbox Controller? Here Is All The Information You Need

This author is a mouse and keyboard type of person. I will be happy with that duo over any controller or gamepad, but some games and sometimes, the importance of a good controller cannot be overstated. Try playing DCS World with a keyboard and mouse, and you will understand what I am on about. As for controllers, this author is firmly and surely in the Xbox  controller faction of the console wars. I am not suggesting that PS controllers are bad or anything, but for this author, the seamless integration with Windows, where I always play my games, is simply too convenient to pass up. I also prefer the asymmetric layout of the Xbox controller, because I am a clutz who cannot tell his right hand from his left when mashing buttons. It just helps my reptile brain keep its neurons untangled.

The best Xbox controller to buy

The standard Xbox controller

The official Xbox Wireless Controller features a dedicated share button for capturing clips and screenshots, Bluetooth support, and a USB-C port for charging Microsoft’s play-and-charge rechargeable battery. Honestly, the best box controller is the standard one, and for good reason.

Specifications:

  • Connectivity: Xbox wireless, Bluetooth, wired
  • Connector type: USB-C
  • Mappable rear buttons: No
  • Software customization: No
  • Power: AA batteries or add-on rechargeable

The "standard" Xbox controller genuinely earns the title of the best option for most Xbox and PC gamers. It may lack some of the premium features of more expensive options, but this controller represents the culmination of four generations of first-party controllers — and it shows. This author has been using the standard Xbox controller for a good amount of time, and I have no complaints, nor do I feel handicapped, even when playing demanding and button-gobbling games like the aforementioned DCS World.

As the only affordable wireless Xbox controller, thanks to Microsoft’s proprietary protocol, it offers flexibility despite coming with AA batteries instead of a built-in rechargeable cell. You can use rechargeable AA batteries or a battery pack, like I do, and it also works as a wired accessory with a USB-C cable. The user-replaceable batteries ensure you won’t be stuck with a controller that loses its charge over time, and if you have a good AA battery charger with spares always charged up, you won’t even feel the loss of a rechargeable battery. This author is so enamoured with this setup, that I actively decided not to not pick up a controller with a rechargeable battery.

The standard Xbox controller is impressive not just for its connectivity but also for its hardware quality at a reasonable price point. The sticks, buttons, triggers, and dish-shaped D-pad all feel incredibly precise, with the D-pad having a satisfying clickiness. While hardcore fighting game fans might prefer an arcade stick or a genre-specific controller with a top-notch D-pad like Hori’s Horipad Pro, the Xbox controller is an excellent all-rounder.

As far as customisation is concerned, the standard Xbox controller leaves something to be desired, but honestly, you probably won’t miss it. There are a tonne of customisation options for you to find your perfect Xbox controller, so you can have a unique piece of gaming gear while rocking the stand pad. This author is the proud owner of the Starfield limited edition Xbox controller. It is well made, looks gorgeous, and feels great.

8BitDo Pro 2 Wired Best Budget Xbox controller

Specifications:

  • Connectivity: Wired
  • Battery life: N/A
  • Sticks: Symmetrical
  • Additional features: N/A

Reasons to Buy:

  • Great build quality
  • Custom button mapping support
  • Budget-friendly price

Reasons to Avoid:

  • PlayStation-style sticks may not suit everyone. For this author, this symmetric layout is a complete dealbreaker.

The 8BitDo Pro 2 Wired Controller for Xbox stands out as a top budget option, continuing the tradition of high-quality third-party peripherals from 8BitDo, known for their popular Ultimate controller for Nintendo Switch. The Pro 2 offers excellent build quality and customizable features, making it a strong contender for Xbox gamers.

Although the Pro 2 is relatively lightweight, it includes two remappable back paddle buttons, allowing for more accessible command inputs. Its symmetrical analog stick layout, reminiscent of the PS5's DualSense, frees up space on the top half of the controller, providing more room for the face buttons and D-pad. This layout, however, might not appeal to everyone, particularly those accustomed to the standard Xbox configuration.

The most striking aspect of the Pro 2 is its affordability. Despite its budget-friendly price, the Pro 2 maintains 8BitDo’s high build quality, ensuring a satisfying user experience. The tactile buttons, sticks, and triggers perform admirably during gameplay. However, the D-pad is somewhat mushy, representing a slight downgrade from the one found on the Xbox Wireless Controller.

Overall, the 8BitDo Pro 2 Wired Controller for Xbox is an excellent budget choice, offering impressive features and build quality at an affordable price.

The Best Premium Xbox Controller: Victrix Pro BFG

Specifications:

  • Connectivity: Wireless, wired
  • Battery life: 20 hours
  • Sticks: Asymmetrical and symmetrical
  • Additional features: Swappable modules, back paddles, trigger stops

Reasons to Buy:

  • Fantastic build quality
  • Incredible modular design
  • Sleek, simple aesthetic

Reasons to Avoid:

  • Battery life could be better
  • No Hall effect sticks included (boo!)

The Victrix Pro BFG sets a new standard for high-end Xbox controllers, surpassing even Microsoft's Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. It combines exceptional build quality with top-notch performance and offers a level of customization that sets it apart.

What makes the Victrix Pro BFG truly unique are its swappable modules, which can be easily changed with an included screwdriver. The box includes three modules: one with an analog stick and D-pad, one with an analog stick and face buttons, and a specialised fightpad module with six mechanical buttons, ideal for fighting games. These modules can be arranged to suit your preference, including the option to configure a PlayStation-style symmetrical stick setup.

Beyond the modular design, the Victrix Pro BFG features programmable rear buttons and trigger stops, allowing you to customise your controller further. The triggers are a bit sensitive by default, but this can be adjusted to match your preferred travel distance.

Overall, the Victrix Pro BFG is a phenomenal premium Xbox controller, offering unparalleled customization and high-quality performance. While it comes with a hefty price tag, the investment is worth it for those seeking the ultimate Xbox controller experience.
