Underrated Destinations: Slovenia

Slovenia had been sitting on my travel list for at least a decade, but somehow, it never quite made it to the top. You know how it is — it is not one of those places that you immediately think of when you are planning your next holiday, which, looking back, is an absolute shame! After finally deciding to explore this stunning little country and spending a few days roaming the Slovenian countryside, I have got two major regrets: not coming sooner and not staying longer.

So, here is my official declaration: Slovenia is extremely underrated. It has shot straight to the top of my travel highlights in recent years, so, if you have been putting it off like I did, just book those tickets. Especially if you are after the perfect escape from the buzz of city life — trust me, a weekend in Slovenia is exactly what you need!

How to get there

The quickest way to fly to Ljubljana from the UAE is with flydubai or Emirates from Dubai International Airport, with a direct flight taking around six hours. If you are planning a trip in November, a round trip will set you back about 2,400 AED. Alternatively, if you don’t mind a pit stop in Frankfurt, Lufthansa offers a layover option for around 1,650 AED. Still not exactly cheap, but once you touch down in Slovenia, the lower expenses within the country should help balance things out.

Another smart option for budget-conscious travellers is to combine Slovenia with visits to other European countries, which can really help lower your overall travel costs. Two birds, one stone!

Which transport to use

Slovenia is compact, so renting a car can be a good idea for exploring different areas at your own pace. You can easily get one at Ljubljana airport from over 20 different providers, with prices for a two-day rental starting at €38. Head over to the airport’s website for more details.

If driving isn’t your thing, no worries — buses and taxis are readily available to bring you around.

Where to stay

Given the short distances between attractions — and especially if you have opted for a rental car — your hotel location isn’t too critical. Just pick a place you fancy that is within a reasonable distance of the spots you want to explore. If relaxation is on the agenda, consider a secluded hotel with a spa or sauna to unwind after a day of sightseeing, or go all out and book a suite in an actual castle. After all, we are talking about a proper relaxing getaway here!

One thing to watch out for: if you are travelling in late autumn or winter, hotel prices can rise due to the winter sports season. So, plan accordingly!

What to explore

Lake Bled

If you are heading to Slovenia for just a couple of days, start the encounter with one of the country’s natural gems — Lake Bled. Dedicate a whole day to soaking in the surroundings: take a stroll or hop on a bike to explore the area, savour stunning views, and indulge in delicious local cuisine. Don’t miss the chance to ride to Bled Island on a traditional wooden pletna boat. Once you are there, treat yourself to a coffee and some potica pastry.

Take your time to unwind and immerse yourself in the serenity. You will be pleasantly surprised by how welcoming and peaceful this place is!

Triglav National Park

Triglav National Park is a must-see for anyone seeking pristine wilderness. You can embark on hikes to explore countless alpine valleys, waterfalls, and crystal-clear rivers. The Seven Lakes Valley and Vintgar Gorge are both stunning options for a day out. If you are an experienced hiker, you might even consider tackling Slovenia’s highest peak — Mount Triglav itself.

Just a word of caution: the hike to Triglav can be challenging and requires good physical fitness, proper equipment, and awareness of the mountain weather conditions, so it is wise to hire a guide or join a group for a safer and more enjoyable experience.

Ljubljana

If you find yourself with some spare time after all your adventures, consider making a brief stop in Ljubljana before your flight back home. Stroll through the charming old town, then take the funicular railway up to Ljubliana Castle for the best views of the city, along with a touch of history and some delightful culinary experiences. The castle is home to two exceptional restaurants featured in the Michelin Guide — Gostilna na Gradu and Restavracija Strelec.
