The Most Anticipated Movies Of Winter 2025

13 Nov 2024

Sequels happen. Spin-offs? Sure. Remakes? Oh, absolutely. Nostalgia has swept over the cinema. This fall alone, we have been treated to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and are gearing up for Gladiator’s much-awaited return. Do we mind? Not in the slightest. If the sequels turn out to be not that great, there is always the comfort of rewatching the originals. Explore the upcoming 2025 movies, and who knows? Amongst these fresh takes and familiar faces, we might find a new favourite — or at least a solid excuse to hit the cinema with a massive popcorn in hand.

Gladiator II

November 15
Ah, the Roman Empire. Home to brutal gladiatorial combat and tragic heroes who have long speeches about revenge. Ridley Scott returns to the arena for Gladiator II, starring Paul Mescal as Lucius, son of Maximus. But hold on — this isn’t a simple ‘son of a fallen hero’ gig. Lucius is out to get vengeance for his family while wearing a very serious face, naturally. Will it be as legendary as the first? Who knows, but if nothing else, we will be treated to some magnificent battle scenes and very grim expressions from everyone involved.

Wicked

November 22
The world of Oz is getting a cinematic overhaul, and it is to be the glittery musical event of the year. Wicked will see Ariana Grande belting out songs and Cynthia Erivo shining as the misunderstood Elphaba. You have heard the musical, you have seen the memes, now prepare for it to be bigger, bolder, and possibly even more green. With a cast like this, we might just be in for a treat.

A Complete Unknown

December 25
Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan. Yes, you read that right. After tons of behind-the-scenes shots, it is finally happening. In A Complete Unknown, Chalamet steps into the shoes of the controversial folk-rock legend, capturing the uproar that followed Dylan’s electric transformation. Directed by James Mangold, the film will dive deep into the 1960s, and we suspect that, while Timmy’s portrayal might not be flawless, it will most certainly be intriguing.

Nosferatu

December 25
Okay, here is one remake that has actually got us excited. Nosferatu, a reimagining of the iconic 1922 silent film, brings gothic horror to a new generation, with Bill Skarsgård (yes, our favourite It boy) ready to give us all nightmares once more. If his turn as Pennywise didn’t get you, this will. The atmosphere is bound to be dark, brooding, and utterly unnerving. If you are a fan of the creepy and bizarre, this one is basically a Christmas gift wrapped in shadows.

The Room Next Door

December 25
Pedro Almodóvar makes his English-language debut, and we hope for something special. In The Room Next Door, Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore star as former friends reunited under intensely poignant circumstances. The film promises emotional depth, and given that the script is adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s What Are You Going Through, you can bet it will be deeply introspective.

Babygirl

January 16
Nicole Kidman as a high-powered CEO engaged in a questionable affair with a younger intern? It sounds like something from a slightly scandalous dream, but Babygirl is ready to turn that dream into a very real reality. Critics may be divided, but the film's mix of erotic thriller and high-stakes drama is bound to keep the buzz alive.

Mickey 17

January 28
In Mickey 17, the author of Parasite Bong Joon-ho returns with a science fiction comedy. The premise is suitably bizarre: Mickey Barnes, an "expendable" worker on an ice planet, dies only to be resurrected with his memories mostly intact. The catch? He is about to face his own clone, Mickey 18. Expect mind-bending twists, and dark humour. It is bound to be a wild ride.

Captain America: Brave New World

February 14
You know the drill by now: Sam Wilson is Captain America, there is an international incident brewing, and a lot of punching is about to happen. We are expecting an explosion of action, a bit of drama, and probably some tearful moments, because superheroes do have feelings, you know.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy

February 14
Brace yourselves, lovers of rom-coms, Bridget Jones is back! And while she may be mad about the boy, we are just hoping the plot doesn’t leave us all mad at the film instead. With Renée Zellweger, Hugh Grant, and Emma Thompson reprising their roles, this is a reunion we have been waiting for (though we miss Colin Firth a bit). It is love, it is laughs, and let us face it, it is exactly what we need to start 2025 with a little heartache and a lot of wine. Bring it on, Bridget.
Missing out on the coolest events in Dubai? We know where you’ll be in November: The Crowd Test Festival — the very first Art and Music Festival by The Sandy Times.
The lineup is incredible: Mainline Magic Orchestra from Spain, Eden Burns from New Zealand, and a lot of your favourite DJs like Hani J, Hassan Alwan, Bazzzuk, and more.
Mark your calendar, snag your tickets, and get ready: November 16, 2024, from 5 PM to 3 AM at Monkey Bar, Dubai.
