Perfect Weekend Getaway: Visit Erevan

29 Jan 2025

For me, Armenia is the perfect place to slow down — a country where it feels completely acceptable to sleep in for an extra two hours, ease into a slow morning routine, and, wrapped in your favourite winter scarf, stroll to the nearest café. Strolling, by the way, is an absolute must in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia (which is actually a visa-free destination for UAE residents), with its charming stone-paved streets and countless spots to grab a bite. Think succulent meats, dolma, lavash, and an endless array of incredible desserts — a feast that could easily turn the gym into your new best friend. And while the relaxing vibe is undeniable, there are still plenty of options for those who cannot resist a bit of activity. But let us take it one step at a time.

How to get there?

Armenia is one of the most affordable destinations from the UAE, making it a top choice for a February getaway. There are two main ways to get there:

  • From Sharjah: Air Arabia offers return tickets for the upcoming weekend at around 800 AED (weekday flights are often even cheaper). The flight takes just three hours.
  • From Dubai: Flydubai offers return tickets for the upcoming weekend at approximately 1,100 AED, which includes an in-flight meal.

Where to stay?

Booking.com and Airbnb are your best bets for finding accommodation in Armenia for a short-term holiday. Don’t expect anything overly extravagant, but you’ll easily find a cosy, comfortable flat with all the essentials covered. One small tip: winters in Armenia can occasionally come with heating issues, so it’s a good idea to pack warm pyjamas and an extra pair of wool socks, just in case.

Here are a few great options to consider:

Where to work?

For some, a weekend getaway can feel like too much effort — you have only just arrived, and it is already time to leave. So, if you are planning to stay for a few extra workdays in Yerevan, don’t worry — the city is full of fantastic spots to get some work done!

  • Lumen Coffee 1936 — A must-visit for all coffee lovers. It is not just about the coffee here, but also the interior – bohemian, luxurious, and a little dark — truly capturing that authentic Yerevan style. The space is laptop-friendly, but even if you are not planning to work, it is worth popping in. They serve excellent breakfasts for early birds (the syrniki are a must-try!) and refreshing drinks for those who venture out later in the day.

  • Ground Zero Specialty Coffee — A haven for busy bees. Perfect for those who work from early morning to late at night, it is open from 8 am to 12 am and boasts a large, bright space, specialty coffee, and a unique feature — the chance to pet fluffy dogs! Isn’t it the best way to de-stress after a working Zoom call?
  • Jermots Café — A green paradise, ideal for those who want not only to work but also to enjoy a tasty meal. The menu is diverse, and the seating layout is perfect for those who prefer a bit of privacy — you can even tuck yourself away behind a leafy plant. If you are on a coffee detox, they also serve fantastic ginger tea, just the thing to warm you up on a winter day!

What to do in Yerevan — Chill Edition

  • Visit Art Exhibitions
Yerevan is a haven for art lovers, with something for everyone. I would highlight two must-visits, one of which is the Yerevan Museum of Contemporary Art, founded back in 1972. In addition to its permanent collections, the museum often hosts themed exhibitions, with the latest being The Colour of Peace. The second must-see will truly impress you if you are a fan of contemporary art and open to something quirky and unusual. It is Contemporary Experimental Art NPAK, and their giant red fingers flying on the wall are truly otherworldly.
  • Treat Yourself to Amazing Food!
Yerevan is a place for food lovers, offering something for everyone — from Japanese sushi to German sausages. Syrovarnya is the place for the best burrata pizza and incredible pasta (they never skimp on the parmesan). 379 Torch and Brew is a dream for meat lovers think sausages that burst in your mouth, releasing a juicy explosion (it is hard to describe without getting hungry). And then there is a bonus for the creative souls Bambak Bar, with amazing signature cocktails and a meat platter that will make your head spin.
  • Go for a Stroll!
I recommend not over-planning your routes in Yerevan, it is hard to get lost. Just walking wherever your feet take you is part of the fun. Along the way, pop into cosy cafés for hot chocolate or visit concept stores for a new T-shirt the perfect souvenir!

What to Do in Yerevan Extreme Edition

  • Hot Air Ballooning
Recently, a new adventure has gone viral in Yerevan, and it is now considered a must-do for anyone who loves excitement and a bit of thrill — hot air ballooning over the Armenian mountains! By the way, this activity does not have a season — Skyball Armenia operates year-round (personally, I think the winter views are even more stunning!). So book your spot and get ready for the flight!
  • Skiing
In winter, Armenia is a fantastic option for skiing enthusiasts. There are two main slopes to choose from:
For the more experienced skier, there is Tsakhkadzor located 50 kilometres from Yerevan. Here, you will find beautiful snowy landscapes, and a well-equipped ski track stretching for about 30 kilometres.
For beginners, the Lernanist community in the Kotayk region is a great option — with fewer crowds and more gentle slopes, it is the perfect place if you are still getting comfortable on the skis!
