If you sometimes feel an overwhelming urge to escape to the mountains, then you will understand me. This is precisely what happened to me this winter when I was planning my holiday to Georgia (look for our travel tips in Tbilisi and around here). Naturally, I was looking forward to wandering through the adorable streets of Tbilisi for a bit, but then came the big decision: Bakuriani or Gudauri? The latter looked peakier, snowier, and frankly, a bit more dramatic — so my choice was made. And, as it turns out, it was absolutely the right one. Here is why.
Easy access for travel and tourism
There are 27 flights from Dubai to Tbilisi every week, including comfortable direct options. Three and a half hours in the air, and suddenly, you are in a whole new world, one filled with cherished traditions, a rich history, and food so good that even Italians would say mamma mia. Opt for flydubai (from 1,216 AED in February) or Emirates (from 2,191 AED in February), and remember — no visa is required for UAE residents. A lovely little bonus.
Once you land, Gudauri is only a two-hour drive from Tbilisi city centre. A taxi cost me around 150 Georgian lari (approximately 195 AED). If you are travelling with a group, a minivan is a good shout at 350 GEL (455 AED).
Looking for a more budget-friendly option? A minibus from Didube bus station in Tbilisi will take you straight to New Gudauri village (which is where I highly recommend staying) for just 15 GEL (20 AED). The journey itself is picturesque, especially in winter — one minute, you are in a city with no snow, and the next, you are surrounded by towering, snow-covered mountains. Travel and tourism at its finest.

Good infrastructure
New Gudauri is a tiny resort nestled right by the ski lift. In peak season, it is supposed to be busy, but let us be honest — it is nothing compared to major European resorts. This means you can genuinely relax and enjoy nature without feeling like you are in a ski-themed music festival. Hotels and apartments are conveniently located within a five-minute walk of the lift, making it easy to roll out of bed and onto the slopes. Multi-day ski passes are available, starting from 70 GEL (91 AED) per day. Skiers and snowboarders can enjoy 80 km of slopes, and for those who love freeriding, fresh snowfall is an absolute dream.
Worried about food? Don't be. Plenty of cafés on the mountains and at the base will keep you well-fed. Think khinkali (huge Georgian dumplings), khachapuri (cheesy bread heaven), lobio (a delicious bean stew), and many more indulgent local dishes. This is après-ski done properly.
Forgot your gear? No worries. There are plenty of rental shops around, so you don't need to lug your travel bag full of ski equipment across continents.
Where to eat?
— Nadiani — great place to enjoy traditional Georgian cuisine. Their eggplant stuffed with walnuts is something, trust me.
— Cafe Bar Pilot — a cozy place to have breakfast before you head to your paragliding trip.
— Drunk Cherry Restaurant — breathtaking view is the main reason to visit the place, as well as huge portions.
Paragliding experience: A must-try adventure for travellers
This, hands down, was one of the best experiences of my life. Paragliding in the mountains is a safe yet exhilarating adventure that gives you an entirely new perspective — literally. I highly recommend SkyAtlantida, a team of professionals with years of experience and the kind of reassuring confidence you want when you are about to be strapped into a parachute. A 15-minute flight costs 599 GEL (778 AED), and if you are up for a bit of an adrenaline rush, they throw in a couple of extreme manoeuvres. Don't get me wrong — I am usually afraid of everything, but in this case, I felt completely safe. And very, very alive.
When to travel: Best seasons for tourism in Gudauri
The skiing season lasts until March, so right now is the best time to go. But if you prefer trekking, rafting, horseback riding, or simply enjoying a break from the heat in lush green surroundings, then summer is equally fantastic. Gudauri is, without a doubt, one of the best travel destinations for escaping the scorching sun while still enjoying outdoor adventures.
So, pack your travel bag, book your flights, and get ready for a perfect weekend getaway filled with skiing, food, and adventure. You won't regret it.
