Ramadan is one of the most significant months in the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a time of fasting, prayer, and reflection. As we approach Ramadan 2025, many people have questions about how it is observed, its significance, and the practical aspects of fasting. Here, we answer some of the most commonly asked questions about Ramadan.

1. Is Ramadan observed by all Muslims?
Ramadan is an essential pillar of Islam, and most Muslims observe fasting during this sacred month. However, there are exemptions. Those who are ill, elderly, pregnant, nursing, menstruating, or traveling are not required to fast. Additionally, young children are not obligated to fast until they reach puberty.
2. Wait… So not even water?!
That is right! Fasting during Ramadan means refraining from all food and drinks, including water, from dawn (suhoor) to sunset (iftar). While this might sound challenging, the body gradually adapts to the fasting routine.
3. Can you chew gum?
No, chewing gum is generally not allowed during fasting hours because it involves ingesting substances that break the fast. Many Islamic scholars advise against it to maintain the purity of the fast.

4. How do people go all day without eating or drinking? Isn’t that harmful for health?
Fasting is practiced in a way that ensures health and well-being. The pre-dawn meal (suhoor) is designed to provide energy for the day, and the evening meal (iftar) replenishes nutrients. Scientific studies suggest that fasting can have health benefits, such as improved metabolism and digestive health, when done properly. However, those with medical conditions should consult a doctor before fasting.
5. Is it only eating and drinking that are prohibited during Ramadan?
No, Ramadan is also about spiritual discipline. Fasting involves abstaining from negative behaviors such as gossip, anger, and dishonesty. Muslims are encouraged to engage in acts of kindness, prayer, and reflection during this time. In fact, Muslims are told that simply being hungry and thirsty during Ramadan is useless, unless fasting is coupled with good behaviour and spiritual contemplation.
6. Why does Ramadan occur at different times each year?
Ramadan follows the Islamic lunar calendar, which is approximately 10–12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. This means that Ramadan 2025 will begin earlier in the year than Ramadan 2024. The exact start date depends on the sighting of the moon.

7. What happens if someone breaks the fast during Ramadan?
If a fast is broken intentionally, it must be made up by fasting later or, in some cases, by feeding the poor. Unintentional breaking of the fast, such as eating by accident, doesn’t invalidate the fast.
8. What if you wake up late and miss suhoor? Is there a ‘backup meal’ option?
If someone misses suhoor, they must fast until sunset without eating or drinking. This can be challenging, but staying hydrated the night before and eating nutritious foods can help maintain energy throughout the day.
9. How many Muslims don’t observe Ramadan? Is it okay?
While most Muslims fast, some are exempt due to health or personal reasons. Islam allows flexibility for those unable to fast, and they can make up the missed fasts later or provide charity in place of fasting if they are permanently unable.

10. Do people lose weight during Ramadan, or is it the opposite?
It depends on eating habits! Some people lose weight due to controlled eating windows, while others gain weight due to heavy iftar meals. Maintaining a balanced diet with proteins, complex carbs, and hydration is key to staying healthy during Ramadan.
Conclusion
Ramadan is a deeply spiritual and communal experience for Muslims around the world. Understanding the Ramadan 2025 schedule, and following a Ramadan calendar can help in planning for the fasting period. Whether fasting or not, respecting those who do and learning about its significance is a great way to appreciate this sacred month!
