Architecture Insights: The Bank In the Brutalist Building

20 Jun 2024

If you find yourself in Amman, Jordan, make sure to visit the Al-Iskan Bank building. It is located in Shmeisani on the western edge of the CBD, right next to Dakhliya Circle. You may not need to go inside, but just standing next to this building and taking it in is worth your time. Al-Iskan remains one of Amman's most unique landmarks.

History

The Al-Iskan Bank, also known as the Jordan Housing Bank, was established in 1973 to support housing construction and provide mortgage loans. Construction of its headquarters in Amman began in 1980, was completed two years later and officially opened by the late King Hussein in 1984. The project was carried out by Ssangyong Engineering and Construction, with Dar Al-Handasah serving as the main contractor.

Details

The building stands 98 meters tall, making it the tallest in Amman when it was constructed and the eighth tallest today. What is inside? 21 floors filled with offices of the Housing Bank for Trade and Finance.

The building is designed in the Brutalist style, characterised by massive concrete structures and strict geometric forms. Its facade is adorned with vertical ribs, creating a dynamic play of light and shadow. The use of local stone allows the building to blend harmoniously into Amman's architectural landscape.

As we mentioned earlier, you don't need to go inside to feel the power of the building. Just standing nearby is enough to sense its energy.
