Established in 2013, Ras Al Khaimah Art is one of the major cultural events on the artistic scene of the UAE. This year marks the great transformation of the Ras Al Khaimah Fine Arts Festival into Ras Al Khaimah Art. Going beyond the confines of the festival, Ras Al Khaimah Art serves as a focal point for creativity, overseeing year-round cultural and thought-provoking initiatives.
RAK Art functions as a central hub empowering emerging artists and the local community through grants, masterclasses, and workshops, fostering the development of their skills and talents.
Under the expert curation of Alfio Tommasini the festival will kick off at the historic Al Jazeera Al Hamra Heritage Village. This immersive cultural celebration blends together heritage and modernity with a diverse lineup of over 100 artists.
The focus
The festival's primary focus revolves around the theme "In Motion". The curator challenges the notion of the “new normal” in our lives after the COVID-19 pandemic, encouraging spectators to welcome the ongoing evolution of our diverse world.
Life is the ultimate ever-changing scenario, where movement is seen as a chance to explore unfamiliar cultures and revive overlooked narratives. Covering topics ranging from artificial intelligence and NFTs to space exploration and environmental initiatives, the festival both honours and scrutinises the influence of motion and transformation.
The Souq
The festival boasts an extensive line-up of diverse artists, introducing The Souq — a contemporary art exhibition and market curated by Sharon Toval.
The souq, meaning “marketplace”, represents a social network that has evolved alongside human civilisation, serving as a central point for the exchange of goods, ideas, and culture. It has played a pivotal role in shaping the social and economic structures of societies throughout history. Rooted in ancient civilisations, iconic marketplaces like the Agora in Greece and the vibrant souks of the Middle East reflect the intricate dynamics of communities.
The civilisational contemporary art exhibition seamlessly aligns with the overarching theme of the festival. It delves into the human experience, exploring our interactions, movements, and existence. The exhibition delves into themes such as gender, culture, and spirituality, aiming to guide visitors through a profound exploration of the "Human Condition", capturing the diverse spectrum of highs and lows in our lives. Featuring artworks by renowned artists, including Maimouna Guerresi, Erkan Ozgen, Shahar Marcus, and Nezaket Ekici, the Souq promises to be an enthralling journey into the complexities of the human spirit — f you want to enrich your daily feed with some artsy profiles, we have linked all the Instagram profiles of artists!
A highlight of the event is the “Ephemeral Whispers”, a dynamic kinetic art installation on the Fort Tower. A captivating piece harmoniously integrates modern and conventional materials on the historical tower. It symbolises unity and the dynamic essence of human interactions, drawing inspiration from the village’s history. The installation showcases intricately woven textiles from diverse cultures, suspended like tapestries. These serve as visual representations of the rich heritage and experiences nurtured by marketplaces throughout different historical periods.
Culinary delights and speaker series
A unique gastronomic journey carefully crafted by Paolo & Kelly Picarazzi, the creators of the acclaimed cultural dining experience Antica Australis, is available exclusively on the first three weekends (so this week is your last chance, champ) and solely as part of the festival.
Antica Australis specialises in offering ancient dishes from the hidden region of Ciociaria in central Italy. For the festival, they have created three distinct four-course set menus, incorporating a fusion of locally sourced organic produce, Australian native ingredients, and Emirati flavours.
This culinary experience is not just about the food. It is also a captivating mix of flavours and storytelling. Antica Australis offers a one-of-a-kind cultural dining adventure that promises to transport you through time and space with every delectable bite.
