1 Sept 2024
It is that time of the month again when we look at the most anticipated music releases of the next month. September is upon us and so are a load of album releases. So, whether your summer was a blast or not, we can all agree it was packed with surprises. And I a not just talking about global events — this season saw some unexpected album releases from artists like Megan Thee Stallion, Jack White, and Childish Gambino. While we can’t predict whether this fall will follow suit, there’s already a promising lineup of new music on the horizon. Expect a mix of returning millennium-era pop stars, Coldplay and Bright Eyes dropping their tenth albums, a surge of gritty guitar rock, and even Katy Perry. As you navigate what promises to be a lively election season, there will be plenty of new releases to keep your playlist fresh.
Fred Again.., ten days
When: September 6
Following a triumphant Bonnaroo headlining set this summer, Fred Again.. is back with an album that reflects on his recent success. His sophomore LP, ten days, features 10 tracks that capture "small quiet intimate moments" from the past year. Collaborating with artists like Sampha, Skrillex, and Emmylou Harris, the South London DJ brings these personal experiences to life with a fresh, introspective sound.
Nilüfer Yanya, My Method Actor
When: September 13
Navigating a period of transition between homes and labels, British singer-songwriter Nilüfer Yanya teamed up with creative partner Wilma Archer to make sense of what has been described as a transitory phase in life. The follow-up to PAINLESS, one of my favourite albums of 2022, My Method Actor mixes acoustic grooves with fuzzed-out power chords, capturing the anxieties of detachment and the challenges of approaching 30.
Katy Perry, 143
When: September 20
Katy Perry's upcoming album, 143, is shaping up to be an exciting new chapter for the pop star. Following her previous release, Smile, which marked a shift in her chart trajectory, 143 promises fresh energy and creativity. Although the lead single, "Woman's World," has had a mixed reception, its unique music video and empowering message set the stage for an album that may surprise and delight fans. With its release, Katy is poised to explore new musical territories and reconnect with her audience in exciting ways.
Manu Chao, Viva Tu
When: September 20
After a hiatus from touring and collaborations, Manu Chao is back with his first solo album since 2007’s La Radiolina. Renowned for blending genres and languages, Chao’s new release, Viva Tu, offers 13 stories about everyday life. The album features a special guest appearance by Willie Nelson on the track “Heaven’s Bad Day.” Additionally, “São Paulo Motoboy” explores Brazilian hip-hop and pays homage to São Paulo’s motorcycle couriers, reminiscent of Chao’s own experiences in Paris.
Tommy Richman, Coyote
When: September 27
At just 24 years old, Tommy Richman is capping off an incredible year with his debut full-length album, Coyote. Unlike many emerging artists who feature a slew of high-profile guests, Richman keeps it personal by collaborating solely with his trusted partners—mynamenstjmack, Trevor Spitta, and Paco. This approach highlights his distinctive voice and artistic vision, steering clear of any “industry plant” speculation.
