For centuries, Jeddah was a central hub for trade and commerce, attracting merchants and travellers worldwide. The city's strategic location made it an ideal meeting point for people from East and West, Africa and Asia. This diverse cultural heritage is still palpable in Al-Balad's vibrant atmosphere.

As you wander through the narrow alleys of Al-Balad, you will feel like you are stepping into a different era. The intricate wooden latticework adorns the buildings, blocking the harsh desert sun and allowing gentle breezes to float. These beautiful designs aren't just for show. They are a testament to the resourcefulness of Jeddah's ancestors.

In recent years, Al-Balad has experienced a cultural renaissance with a growing community of Saudi artists calling the district home.

The Saudi Artists Breathing New Life into Jeddah's Oldest Neighborhood is a fantastic initiative bringing artistry back to the winding alleys of Al-Balad, Jeddah's most culturally distinct district. The program has already led to the opening of art spaces and cultural events like the Balad Beast EDM festival, which took place in December 2022. Moreover, traditional crafts are being revived, thanks to initiatives from the Ministry of Culture.

Explore the narrow alleys and bustling souks with The Sandy Times as your guide, where traditional crafts and modern artistry blend seamlessly.
