MENA Local Heroes: Listen Now To the Third Edition By Noura AlKhalaf
It is already time for another sonic update, because apparently the months are now sprinting too. Conveniently, so is our next guest.
MENA Local Heroes is STR’s monthly guest-curated playlist series, curated exclusively for Apple Music, spotlighting the people, spaces, and communities shaping the region’s sound from within.
For the first edition, we invited Honeycomb Hi-Fi, Dubai’s finest listening bar and one of our favourite places to hear music treated with the care it deserves. Their takeover brought together pre-club selections from Honeycomb’s residents and extended family, creating a little emotional map of the moments before the night begins.
For the second edition, KLO took us somewhere softer and more intimate, with a comfort-zone soundtrack rooted in neo-soul, R&B, self-care, solo walks, Sade, and the very important process of becoming emotionally prepared to leave the house.
Now, for the third edition, we invited Noura AlKhalaf — a name many people in the UAE running community will already recognise. A long-distance runner from the United Arab Emirates, she is the first female UAE national marathon record holder and an official Puma ambassador. So yes, the pace has changed slightly. This is less “slow down and reconnect with yourself” and more “switch on, lock in, and become a person with alarming levels of momentum”.
Her playlist is built around movement, rhythm, and high-octane energy: Arab pop hooks, global cinematic beats, Afrobeats, South Asian hip-hop, Amapiano, Afro-house, and tracks that understand the assignment immediately. It is a soundtrack for morning workouts, demanding creative sessions, sunset drives, and any moment when you would like to feel unstoppable but still tastefully curated.
Naturally, we asked Noura what this playlist means to her, where it should be listened to, and what it says about the sound of the region today.
— What does this playlist represent to you personally?
— To me, this playlist represents movement, momentum, and the beautiful chaos of living a fast-paced, multi-dimensional life.
I have always been drawn to sounds that carry high-octane energy and strong rhythms. It is a sonic reflection of my personal drive — vibrant, unapologetic, and constantly moving forward. It is the music that pushes me to find my focus and keep my energy levels exactly where they need to be.
— Where would you recommend listening to it? Is there a particular place, time of day, or even a state of mind that feels right?
— This is 100% a high-performance, peak-energy playlist. It is designed for when you need to switch on, dig deep, and lock into a flow state.
Whether you are hitting a morning workout, powering through a demanding creative session, or driving down the highway at sunset, it is meant for moments when you want to feel absolutely unstoppable.
— What do you think this playlist says about the sound of the region today?
— It highlights that our region is a global cultural crossroads. We aren't defined by just one traditional genre anymore; our soundscape is completely borderless.
You can transition seamlessly from a massive Arab pop hook by Ruby or Amr Diab into global cinematic beats, Afrobeats, or intense South Asian hip-hop, and it all feels completely cohesive. The youth and creative culture here embrace the whole world, blending local identity with global mainstream energy.
— Were there any particular artists, scenes or sonic influences you wanted to spotlight through your selection?
— I really wanted to capture global rhythm transitions — specifically how different cultures manipulate high energy.
I wanted to spotlight massive cross-cultural collaborations like Nora Fatehi working with Vegedream and Sanjoy on “SIIR SIIR”, alongside the incredible global rise of South Asian hip-hop artists like Hanumankind with “The Game Don’t Stop”.
I also wanted a strong nod to the undeniable rhythmic pulse of Amapiano and Afro-house through tracks like “Jealousy”.
— Is there one track on the playlist that feels especially personal or meaningful to you?
— I actually don't have a single favourite song — it completely depends on my mood, the time of day, and the place I am in. Every single track on this list was chosen because it owns a specific moment.
One day I might lean into the intense focus of “Tokyo Drift” or “The Game Don’t Stop” to lock into a zone, and the next day I will want the uplifting, sun-drenched energy of “Lama Elseef Wasal” or “La Copa de la Vida”.
The beauty of this playlist is that it shifts shape alongside your day.
— For someone discovering this music for the first time, what would you want them to notice?
— I want them to notice the pure, infectious rhythm and how easily these tracks command your attention.
Even if you don't understand every language being sung or rapped across the 15 tracks, the feeling and the bassline drive are universal. Music is a global language, and this selection is proof that great energy requires no translation.
And honestly, that feels like exactly the point. Noura’s playlist does not politely suggest movement. It insists on it. It is made for pace, focus, sweat, sunlight, speed, and the particular delusion that, with the right track on, you could probably finish everything on your to-do list and maybe run a marathon after.
Listen to MENA Local Heroes: Noura AlKhalaf now on Apple Music.
