Your Week In Dubai: What To Do, July 21–27

Dubai does not seem particularly interested in slowing down for summer. This week, the city is giving us plenty of reasons to leave the house — although, thankfully, most of them involve air conditioning, coffee or a very good meal.

You can spend the final days of Charlie Koolhaas’s exhibition looking at Dubai through its architecture, head upstairs at PUBLIC to see what Duette+ has turned its first floor into, or make a serious food plan around four chef-led restaurants opening under one roof. There is also a new bkry for anyone who has already worked their way through the Alserkal menu, and an entire festival dedicated to proving that caviar can go on almost anything.

July 21, Tuesday. After The Image by Charlie Koolhaas

Where? XVA Gallery

A photo does not necessarily have to stay inside a frame. In After The Image, artist and photographer Charlie Koolhaas turns images of Dubai’s architecture into textiles, garments, sculptures and an entire hotel-room installation.

The exhibition looks at the city’s modern architectural history not as something distant or frozen in an archive, but as something that can be entered, touched and even worn. Originally expected to close earlier, the show has now been extended until July 24 — so this is your final week to see it.

July 22, Wednesday. Duette+ takes over PUBLIC

Where? PUBLIC, Dubai Mall

PUBLIC has given its first floor to the team at Duette+, who have turned it into a cultural clubhouse for this month.

Come up before dinner, wander in after dessert or make it the main plan altogether. The programme will keep changing, so check @duette_studio for what is happening that day — or simply show up and see where the evening takes you.

July 23, Thursday. Four restaurants, one destination

Where? Chef’s Society, City Centre Mirdif

Choosing where to eat becomes considerably harder when four very different restaurants open under the same roof.

Chef’s Society is City Centre Mirdif’s new chef-led dining destination, bringing together Bait Maryam’s comforting Levantine cooking, Gabriele Bonci’s Roman pizza al taglio, the all-day menu at ATHAR By the Qlab and the Japanese-inspired dishes of REIF Japanese Kushiyaki.

The sensible approach would be to choose one. The more interesting approach would be to arrive hungry and try a little bit of everything. More restaurants are expected to join the line-up in the coming months.

July 24, Friday. Meet the new bkry

Where? Nad Al Sheba Mall

After turning its Alserkal Avenue space into one of Dubai’s most reliable destinations for croissants, sourdough and very long weekend queues, bkry has opened its second location at Nad Al Sheba Mall.

The new space still feels recognisably bkry, with warm interiors, a glass-fronted production kitchen and plenty of baking happening in full view. This time, however, there is also a larger dining area, a full food menu and several pastries created exclusively for Nad Al Sheba.

July 25, Saturday. Сaviar by the sea

Where? Sirene Beach by GAIA, J1 Beach

Sirene by GAIA started its World Caviar Day celebration on July 18, but thankfully, the caviar did not disappear when the official date was over. The restaurant’s Tuna Caviar is available daily for dine-in, so consider this your chance to extend the occasion by another weekend.

The dish brings together delicate tuna tartare, finely chopped shallots and a generous layer of premium caviar, all served on a crisp olive cracker. It is rich, salty and crunchy — and probably tastes even better when eaten somewhere between the beach and the sea.

July 26, Sunday. Follow Cinema Akil into the dark

Where? Cinema Akil, Alserkal Avenue

Cinema Akil’s annual Summer of Classics is now underway, bringing films from different eras, countries and corners of the human psyche back to the big screen.

Sunday’s programme includes the political thriller All the President’s Men, Spanish short film The Match, Jonathan Demme’s deeply unsettling The Silence of the Lambs and Park Chan-wook’s even more unsettling Oldboy.

Choose according to your preferred level of Sunday anxiety — then get some karak at Chai Diner afterwards and slowly return to reality.

July 27, Monday. Do absolutely nothing

You have seen the exhibitions, tried the new restaurants, eaten caviar by the sea and spent Sunday hiding from the heat inside a cinema. On Monday, let’s slow the rhythm down.
