Abu Dhabi’s cultural calendar has just gained a very important date: Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will officially open its doors on December 11, 2026.

The museum has long been one of the most closely watched projects on Saadiyat Island. Now, we finally know when visitors will be able to step inside.

Designed by Frank Gehry, the architect behind the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the building sits between land and sea and looks nothing like a conventional museum. Its 30 galleries are connected by a central atrium, while ten enormous sculptural cones rise through the structure, creating shade, natural ventilation and a rather dramatic skyline.

Inside, the museum will focus on modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. But do not expect a straightforward walk through art history, moving neatly from one decade to the next.

Instead, the galleries will bring together artists, places and ideas through themes including abstraction, popular culture, land, language and storytelling. Visitors will be encouraged to choose their own route and discover connections between works from different regions and generations.

That approach is central to the museum’s identity. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi may be part of the same international family as the museums in New York, Venice and Bilbao, but it is being shaped through an Abu Dhabi lens. Its collection, which has been growing since 2009, will combine regional perspectives with work from artists across the world.

Painting, sculpture, photography, installation, moving image and new media will all have a place here. In other words, this is not a museum designed only for quiet paintings hanging in white rooms. The scale of the building leaves plenty of space for large, experimental and immersive works too.

And the scale really is substantial. Alongside 11,600 square metres of indoor gallery space, the museum will include 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition areas spread across its cones and terraces. The entire development covers around 80,000 square metres, with some of its sculptural structures reaching up to 88 metres high.

Once it opens, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will join Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi within Saadiyat Cultural District. That means a visit to the island is increasingly becoming less of a quick museum stop and more of a full cultural itinerary.

So, save the date: December 11, 2026.
