This week starts with matcha and ends with matcha — which feels about right for Dubai in August. In between, there is a Yorgos Lanthimos film at Cinema Akil, a new Tanoor location, a 24-hour music experiment in Al Quoz and six hours of techno, vinyl and art at Secta. Here is what is worth leaving the house for.

Where? La Petite Ani, Gate Avenue, DIFC

If your homemade matcha still ends up either watery or suspiciously clumpy, La Petite Ani might be able to help.

This summer, the café is taking guests behind the counter for a series of complimentary hands-on matcha masterclasses led by its barista team. You will get into the basics — where matcha comes from, how different grades are used and, most importantly, how to whisk it properly.

And yes, you will make your own drink. Choose between a Classic Iced Matcha Latte and a Matcha Cloud and see whether your kitchen attempts improve from here.

Sessions take place at 5 pm and 6:30 pm on August 25, September 1 and September 8.

Where? Cinema Akil, Alserkal Avenue

Cinema Akil is screening The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Yorgos Lanthimos's unsettling 2017 psychological thriller starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman and Barry Keoghan.

It starts as a story about a surgeon, his seemingly perfect family and a teenage boy who keeps appearing in their lives. Then things get progressively stranger, darker and much harder to explain without ruining it.

The screening starts at 9:45 pm.

Where? Tanoor, Nad Al Hamar

Tanoor has made its way from Hatta to Dubai. The family-run spot has opened a new location in Nad Al Hamar, carrying with it the idea that sits at the heart of the original: food is only part of the story. Tanoor is also about long tables, family gatherings, friends dropping by and the kind of meals that become memories without anyone really planning them to.

So if Hatta has always felt a little too far for an impromptu Tanoor visit, this should make things considerably easier. New neighbourhood, same roots!

Manifold Gestures is a fully online group show bringing together works by seven artists from the Dubai gallery’s archive, all connected by one surprisingly universal subject: the hand and the gestures we make with it. The line-up includes Farah Al Qasimi, Fouad Elkoury, Huda Lutfi, Pouran Jinchi, Sara Naim, Slavs and Tatars, and Youssef Nabil, with the exhibition available to explore until September 5.

The exhibition looks at how it has appeared throughout thousands of years of visual culture — from palm prints left in prehistoric caves and Leonardo da Vinci’s studies to the raised fist that became a powerful political symbol in the 20th century.

Secta is closing out August with Beau Didier behind the decks — a producer known for hardgroove, technical precision and sets that are just as playful as they are heavy.

The usual two-room setup is back too. Mahyar Parsa takes over one of them with an intimate, eclectic vinyl session, while Filipino artist Kian Sison joins the Art Hub with his unconventional fine-art portraits.

There is also a freshly restocked vinyl store with new picks from major techno labels. Add six hours of music, art and dancing, and that is Saturday sorted.

Paus is hosting another edition of its Matcha Morning series, this time built around a question that has become increasingly difficult to avoid: how important is it to build a personal brand these days?

Expect a morning that is less about formal networking and more about sitting down over matcha and talking through what it means to be visible online, whether everyone really needs a "brand" now and where personality ends and self-promotion begins.
