The UAE cultural season is awake again, and it has apparently chosen maximum intensity. Between September and the end of 2026, The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi is offering techno-fuelled dance, Emirati orchestral premieres, contemporary Arab cinema, Moroccan hip hop and workshops for anyone no longer satisfied with simply sitting in the audience.

Here is what deserves a place in your calendar.

The Butterfly Who Flew Into The Rave

September 10–12, 7:30 pm | The Black Box

Three dancers. One hour. No pauses. Set to Suburban Knight’s booming Detroit techno album Nocturbulous Behaviour, this award-winning work by Oli Mathiesen, Lucy Lynch and Sharvon Mortimer compresses the intensity of a three-day rave into 60 minutes of sweat, precision and heroic physical suffering.

Afterwards, the audience is invited onto the stage for Raving Ovation, a techno after-party powered by Analog Room. Moe plays on Thursday, Cyrill Reaidy on Friday and Bazzzuk on Saturday. The dancing is included in the ticket; the state of your knees the following morning is your own concern.

Go if: your preferred cultural experience falls somewhere between contemporary dance and staying out irresponsibly late.

To This Land, We Belong — UAE National Orchestra

September 18, 8 pm | The Red Theater

The UAE National Orchestra opens its second season with three Emirati compositions receiving their world premieres. Conducted by Ahmed Farag, the programme moves through the country’s founding story, landscapes, musical traditions and evolving sense of identity.

Khalid Nassir’s The Founder’s Journey reflects on the life and philosophy of the UAE’s Founding Father; Ali Kano’s Homeland Melodies brings oriental instruments into conversation with the orchestra; and Fayez Al Saeed’s Lightning, Thunder & Longing unites orchestra, choir and the poetry of Arif Al Khajah.

Go if: you want to hear a new Emirati orchestral repertoire at the precise moment it enters the world.

CinemaNA: Cotton Queen

September 28, 7:30 pm | The Red Theater

Sudanese filmmaker Suzannah Mirghani takes us to a cotton-farming village where teenage Nafisa becomes caught between her grandmother, a young businessman, a development scheme and genetically engineered cotton. What begins as a dispute over the village’s future becomes a story about colonial memory, power and a young woman discovering her own agency.

Go if: you like coming-of-age films with considerably higher stakes than choosing the correct university.

September’s workshops invite participants to explore tension through performance in Striking Chords on September 7, learn rave-informed choreography in Choreographing the Club on September 8, and reconsider everything they thought they knew about ordinary objects in Youness Atbane’s Body as an Object laboratory on September 29.

October 1–2, 7:30 pm | The Black Box

Inside an imaginary museum, an Arab-Andalusian poet, a director, a curator and an artist attempt to create an exhibition about modernism and Arab identity. Predictably, it gets complicated.

Combining dance, theatre, performance and installation, Youness Atbane’s satirical work examines who gets to define “contemporary Arab identity”, how institutions manufacture legitimacy and what happens when heritage enters the global art system. It is essentially an exhibition-planning meeting, only much more honest and far better choreographed.

Go if: you have ever heard the phrase “in dialogue with identity” at an art opening and wanted someone to investigate further.

Naïssam Jalal and Hazem Shaheen

October 9, 7:30 pm | The Red Theater

Flutist and vocalist Naïssam Jalal joins Egyptian oud player, singer and composer Hazem Shaheen for an intimate meeting of Arabic taqsim and contemporary jazz improvisation.

Rather than placing traditions neatly beside one another, the pair create a shared musical language shaped by memory, experimentation and freedom. It is meditative, intricate and ideal for anyone whose nervous system has had enough of notifications.

Go if: you would like your evening to feel less like entertainment and more like recalibration.

Cineolio’s Cinenights

October 20, 7:30 pm | The Blue Hall

Five short films travel from Italy to Iraq, the United States, Peru and Ghana, taking in grief, migration, memory, nature and the invisible human cost of social media. The programme, curated by Emirati filmmaker Nawaf Al Janahi, will be followed by a conversation about the films.

Go if: you want five worlds in one evening and appreciate a film ending before your attention span begins negotiating terms.

Näss (People) — Fouad Boussouf

October 30, 7:30 pm | The Red Theater

Seven dancers bring together contemporary hip hop, North African rhythms and the legacy of Moroccan group Nass el Ghiwane. Choreographer Fouad Boussouf connects the spiritual charge of ritual with the raw physicality of urban dance, creating something between a confrontation, a celebration and a trance.

The result is fiercely collective, deeply rooted and almost indecently energetic.

Go if: you like dance that begins in the body but carries an entire cultural history with it.

Experienced dancers can also explore the production from within at the Näss choreographic workshop on October 29.

CinemaNA: Promised Sky

November 3, 7:30 pm | The Blue Hall

In French-Tunisian filmmaker Erige Sehiri’s Promised Sky, an Ivorian pastor living in Tunisia opens her home to two other women searching for security and a future. When an orphaned girl arrives, their improvised family is tested by an increasingly tense social climate.

It is a tender story about migration, solidarity and the limits of what people can offer one another when everyone is already carrying too much.

Go if: you prefer films that trust you to sit with complicated people rather than sort them into heroes and villains.

Hekayah | The Story

November 26, 7:30 pm | The Black Box

Now in its 12th edition, Hekayah | The Story marks Eid Al Etihad by bringing together poets, singers, dancers and instrumentalists from across the UAE.

The line-up is selected collaboratively by figures from the country’s literary and performing arts communities, making the evening less a polished declaration of national identity and more a living portrait of the many voices, languages and experiences within it. The final performers are still to be announced, which gives you something culturally productive to anticipate.

Go if: you want to celebrate the UAE by listening to the people continually reshaping its story.

On November 22 and 23, choreographer Nacera Belaza begins The Essence of Gesture, a five-session movement workshop continuing into 2027. Participants will explore attention, physical presence and the relationship between the inner self and outward movement.

Registration means committing to the entire series. This is not a casual “perhaps I will attend if traffic is fine” arrangement.

And with Hekayah currently the final announced Arts Center event of 2026, you can enter December culturally fulfilled, lightly exhausted and free to return to your regularly scheduled festive obligations.
