Perfect Weekend Getaway: Najd Al Meqsar By Sharjah Collection
Staycations usually come with a familiar dilemma. You either choose “adventure”, which often means admiring spectacular views while pretending a questionable mattress is part of the charm, or you pick comfort, which is lovely, of course, but can feel about as memorable as a business hotel fruit platter. Najd Al Meqsar by Sharjah Collection, however, manages to sit very smugly in the middle. Just an hour and a half from Dubai, perched high above Khorfakkan in the Sharjah mountains, it offers the rare pleasure of feeling like you have escaped civilisation without having to give up air-conditioning, proper coffee, or the general will to live.
What is Meqsar village?
Najd Al Meqsar isn't one of those places that has been “inspired by heritage”, which usually means someone added a lantern and a wooden door to a fairly standard resort. This is the real thing: a restored mountain village with stone houses that are more than a century old, set in a dramatic landscape of wadis, peaks and vast open sky. Nearby stands Al Meqsar Fortress, around 300 years old, quietly surveying the terrain as if it has seen all of this before and isn't especially impressed.
The village itself was once used as a refuge from floods, and the wider area carries layers of history that go back much further. Archaeological findings in the region point to human presence stretching back thousands of years, while the settlement also played a role as a place of shelter during more turbulent periods in local history. In other words, this is not just a beautiful place to spend the weekend — it is a place with genuine texture, memory and stories built into the stone.
Architecturally, it is especially compelling. The houses follow the logic of old mountain settlements in the region: thick stone walls to keep interiors cool, dense placement to protect against wind, and forms that work with the landscape rather than against it. Everything here feels grounded, practical and quietly elegant. It doesn't scream for attention, which, naturally, makes it all the more attractive.
What to do there?
The obvious answer is: very little, ideally. But in the best possible way.
This is a place for people who enjoy the idea of slowing down, staring at mountains and feeling faintly superior about it. The views alone are reason enough to come — rolling hills, lush valleys, dramatic ridgelines and sunsets that behave as though they have been professionally arranged. By night, the sky puts on an equally strong performance, with stars bright enough to remind you that city living has truly lowered your standards.
If sitting still isn't your preferred holiday activity, there is plenty to do. Hiking is one of the main draws, with walking trails leading through the Hajar Mountains and around the surrounding wadi landscape. There is a dedicated trail towards Al Rafisah Dam, where kayaking makes a very good follow-up to a mountain walk and an even better excuse for lunch afterwards. Guests can also hike up to the historic Al Meqsar Fortress, which adds a little narrative depth to the cardio.
Beyond the village, Khorfakkan’s east coast offers easy excursions for a fuller weekend itinerary. You can explore mountain roads, seek out scenic viewpoints, or simply spend the day oscillating between culture, coffee and the increasingly ambitious belief that you might become an outdoors person.
What does the stay offer?
This is where Najd Al Meqsar becomes particularly persuasive. Yes, it is heritage-focused. Yes, it is scenic. But it is also, crucially, comfortable.
The stay is spread across restored Kareen Houses, which pay tribute to traditional Emirati culture while quietly including all the things modern guests mysteriously can't live without. The houses preserve their original character with stone walls, wooden beams, palm-frond ceilings and a restrained, earthy palette that suits the mountain setting. Interiors are minimal but warm, filled with tactile materials, soft lighting and carefully chosen details.
Each unit comes with the comforts of an excellent boutique stay: from king beds and rain showers, to an outdoor area where you can pretend you are writing a novel or, more realistically, drink coffee while looking pleased with your life choices.
What makes the experience work is that the comfort never undermines the atmosphere. You aren't staying in a generic luxury suite dropped onto a mountain. You are staying in a place that genuinely reflects its surroundings and history, while still allowing for excellent sleep and a functioning hairdryer. It is heritage hospitality done properly: immersive, thoughtful and free of unnecessary hardship.
There is also Wishi Restaurant nearby, which means you don't have to forage, hunt, or make any other heroic effort for dinner. Instead, you can enjoy a meal with mountain views, then return to your stone house and listen to the silence — a rare commodity, and one this place provides generously.
Why book it?
Because it solves the staycation problem rather elegantly. Najd Al Meqsar gives you mountain air, heritage architecture, cinematic views and a genuine sense of escape, without asking you to compromise on comfort or style. It is romantic without trying too hard, historic without becoming dusty, and remote enough to feel special while still being perfectly manageable for a weekend.
In short, it is for anyone who likes the idea of disappearing into the mountains for a couple of days, but would still prefer proper bedding, a beautiful shower and coffee that arrives in a cup rather than from a camping stove. Which, frankly, is the correct instinct.
