Some DJs make you lose track of time on a dance floor. For his STR mix, Elie Eidelman does it at a gentler pace: an hour of downtempo electronica weaving through trip-hop, Balearic, dub and deep house. The rhythms are unhurried, but there is plenty to keep your ears busy. I would put it on while doing something useful — and probably forget what that was halfway through.
Born in New York and based in Berlin since 2004, Elie is the founder of JackOff Records and Mensch Booking Agency, with decades spent digging, DJing and organising parties. House and disco are familiar territory, but his musical curiosity stretches back to the early-nineties rave scene — and has never been particularly interested in staying in one lane.
Here, that openness takes a quieter form. Drawing on his experiences visiting and DJing in Dubai, Elie brings together Middle Eastern influences, Indian sounds and Spanish guitar, with a warm Balearic thread running through the selection. The city provides a personal point of reference, shaping the mood of the hour.
So, before you press play: no need to find a dance floor, although a little movement around the kitchen is entirely understandable.
