Think you know rock ’n’ roll? Well, chances are, quite a lot of what you love about it started with Chuck Berry. The guitar riffs you recognise in seconds, the attitude, the songs about teenage crushes, fast cars and getting into trouble — Berry was doing all of that back in the 1950s, long before most of your favourite rock stars had even picked up a guitar.

And while Johnny B. Goode, Roll Over Beethoven and Maybellene are practically compulsory listening, there is much more to Berry than the songs everyone knows. This week's Focus On brings together 14 tracks, from the slow, bluesy Wee Wee Hours to the wonderfully chaotic Too Much Monkey Business and the rather cheeky My Ding-A-Ling — surprisingly, his only number one on the US Billboard Hot 100.

One thing worth paying attention to is how much storytelling Berry managed to squeeze into a three-minute song. School Day captures the frustrations of being a teenager, Nadine turns a chance encounter into a comic chase through the city, while Promised Land follows a journey across America.

My advice? Turn it up, pay attention to the lyrics and try not to dance if you happen to be listening in public. And if you are listening in the car, lucky you — forget that last bit. As for those suspiciously familiar guitar riffs, don’t be surprised. Chuck Berry probably got there first.
