Travel itinerary: Weekend in Oman
To make the most of your weekend escape, consider landing on Friday evening, allowing you to relish every moment of your Omani adventure. As a UAE resident, you are likely accustomed to Saturday-Sunday weekends. However, in Oman, Fridays and Saturdays are the weekend days. Plan accordingly to make the most of your trip.
Insider Tip: Confirm tourist spots hours before heading out.
Catch a quick 40-minute flight from Dubai with Oman Air, starting from just AED 700 return. Or, set out on a scenic 3–5 hour road trip from the UAE, soaking up spectacular mountain and desert views. As you arrive at Muscat International Airport, the excitement begins. Choose a convenient hotel near Muscat International Airport.
Split your day between Muscat and Nizwa to truly savour the charm of both cities. Spend the morning exploring the highlights of Muscat, like the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the Royal Opera House. After lunch, head to Nizwa to visit its historic fort and vibrant souq.
Tomorrow, dedicate the entire day to exploring Salalah since it is quite a distance from Muscat. This way, you can fully appreciate each destination without feeling rushed.
When travelling to Muscat, consider renting a car for flexibility. Parking is usually free and easy to find. Plan your trip between October and March for cooler weather. Avoid summer months when temperatures soar.
Remember to adjust your itinerary according to Oman's weekend schedule, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable trip.

Nizwa's ancient charm in a few hours
To probe Oman's rich history and culture, travel to Nizwa, a city steeped in tradition, on a mid-day trip from Muscat. With its well-preserved forts, vibrant souqs, and extraordinary architecture, Nizwa is an ideal destination.
Take the direct bus from Muscat, which runs twice daily, and enjoy the scenic 2.5-hour journey. Alternatively, rent a car or take a taxi, but be prepared for a higher cost.
Start at the famous Nizwa Souq, where you can find traditional Omani products, handicrafts, and souvenirs. Wander through the narrow streets, admiring intricately carved wooden doors and balconies.
Visit the impressive Nizwa Fort, a 400-year-old military stronghold, now a museum showcasing Omani weaponry, costumes, and artefacts.
Don't miss Falaj Daris, one of Oman's largest and most impressive irrigation systems, in continuous use for over 1,500 years.
For additional travel highlights, consider Bahla Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring complex walls, towers, and courtyards. Look into Jabreen Castle, a well-preserved castle with intricate designs and carvings. Discover Tanuf Ruins, a significant archaeological site offering a glimpse into pre-Islamic history.
Conclude your day with a delicious biryani dinner at a local cafeteria, surrounding yourself with the authentic flavours of Oman.
After exploring Nizwa, get back to your hotel, ready for an early morning departure to Salalah.
