How To Choose a Versatile Small Purse And Make It Fit Your Essentials

There are two types of people: the “all that is mine with me all the time” folks, strolling around with oversized totes packed for any possible life scenario, and laidback adventurists, rocking tiny handbags which can barely fit a phone. But, let us be honest, sometimes both need an option in between — like when you are heading to a party straight from the office, meeting friends for a coffee, packing light for a weekend getaway or just running errands. But how do you find a perfect small bag and make it fit all your essentials? Here are some tips that work for me.

Finding the balance of style and practicality has always been my challenge. As a fashion editor constantly darting between editorial meetings and all kinds of events from fashion shows and presentations to parties, restaurant launches and whatnot, the idea of waltzing a heavy bag around the city has never thrilled me. The extra weight wears you down, and let us face it, sometimes an oversized tote simply looks out of place. The problem is, I still need to carry some things. So, after much trial and error, here is what I learned.

Set your priorities

Before rushing to buy a handbag to accommodate all your needs, take a moment to critically think about what those needs really are. Do you actually need a big wallet, a full-size bottle of perfume, a vanity case full of makeup and the complete edition of the “War and Peace”?

Take stock of what you truly use daily, and you might be surprised.

My must-have kit includes an iPhone, keys, a cardholder, tissues, wet wipes, blotting papers, refillable Haan sanitizer, a micro pill box with some basic medicines, plasters and an anti-blister stick, a lip balm, a flat hair comb, a nail file, a pair of sunglasses, a cord charger and AirPods. If I still have space, I will throw in a foldable tote bag and a bottle of water. But if I am going smaller, I can easily do with the bare minimum of my phone, keys, sanitizer and a pack of tissues.

Size down and think out of the box

Normally, we don’t need “just in case” things in full-size and big quantities, so think of compact versions of your must-haves. I prefer having everything flat, square or cylindrical as it is easier to squeeze in and organize. Another thing worth considering is creative storage solutions. I trim blisters of some basic medicines such as painkillers and allergy pills into smaller sections and tetris them in an ex-mint tin. This miniature emergency kit is no bigger than a matchbox and fits into the tiniest clutch. I also swap out bulky sunglasses cases for the soft pouches, saving tons of space.

But what about the right bag?

When choosing an all-arounder that can transition from day to night, think in terms of appropriateness. A silver sequin bag might be fun for the evening, but probably not ideal in a corporate setting with a strict dress code.

Another thing is the time the purse will serve you. As a huge handbag enthusiast, I want to enjoy pieces I own for many seasons, so when buying a new one I always ask myself:

  • Does it match my style, the clothes I already have and the colour palette I normally wear?
  • Is it a base or statement piece? How often can I wear it and with which outfits?
  • Do I want it because it is trendy? Will I still love it in a few years?

If this little check doesn’t promise a bag to become a hardworking horse, I will most likely skip the purchase. I am not saying your bag has to be boring, but it should be versatile enough to be worn regularly. After all, what is the point of buying things you won’t use?

So, the obvious conclusion is to go for the bag that matches your style, aesthetic sensitivity and lifestyle. Here are the things I would pay attention to while buying a timeless accessory:

  • Clean, geometric silhouette or an interesting shape that won’t date
  • High-quality leather and durable hardware
  • A neutral colour or one that compliments your wardrobe
  • Smooth skin with a statement yet neat hardware or textured leather — grained, patent or embossed (with croco, lizard, or snake pattern)
  • Preferably no logos

And, above all, a bag should make you excited every time you look at it!
