The Stories Of People Who Make Your Food: ABC Coffee Roasters

12 Nov 2024

Statistically, a person gets more endorphins from food, than from anything else, throughout their lifetime. Let’s be honest, we all love to grab a bite somewhere. They say — dolce far niente. And here in Dubai we ‘dolce’ it hard. With all the varieties of special places, catering to any possible wishes and tastes, we have so many possibilities to explore food from so many points of view.
In this series, I want to introduce you to my favourite spots and amazing people behind the flawless meals they serve.
Each team was asked the same questions:
  • What does your day usually look like?
  • What is your favourite part of every day?
  • What are the pros and cons of working in hospitality?
  • What is your favourite dish on the menu?
Let us get to know them and sneak into the minds of those who make us happy!
(pro tip: note the fav dishes, they must be amazing if the team loves them).

ABC Coffee Roasters

Locations: Dubai Hills Mall and One Central in DWTC Excelling in both — coffees and pastries — this place has a lot to offer. Any regular knows that ABC Coffee Roasters is about the quality of taste and the time you spend in the café. Thus, with the pleasing interiors they also host our lovely book club (sign up here, if you want to become a part of the reading crew). Delicious breakfasts (author’s go-to is shakshuka) and please don’t miss out on a special Moscowitz' coffee — raf. It is sweet, it is creamy, it is energising — all in one. Just like ABC Coffee Roasters.

Macoy, Barista

— What is your favourite part of the day?
— My favourite part of the day is the morning shift. I feel so productive during my busy hours. It is like I am playing a complex game, but enjoying every single minute of that peak hour. Everything is so organised and so smooth. Aside from that, completing target goals day by day is such a satisfying process for the team which helps us motivate ourselves.
— What are your pros and cons of working in the hospitality industry?
— I have been in the industry since 2011 and it helped me a lot to improve my communication skills, which helped me to move abroad. Hospitality helps me grow and my work is my passion, I love with all my heart. So, doing what you love and getting better at it is definitely a pro.
I think the pressure is the main cons. And then working abroad and being away from my family. Sometimes problems occur, but it is normal. I am taking the problem as an opportunity. Because I believe if there is no problem — there is no opportunity for achievement. I like solving our daily puzzles.
— How does your day usually go?
— I always wanted a happy environment, where nobody gets sad, nobody gets tired while working. I am always acting happy just to avoid my colleagues getting affected and I feel supported by them vice versa. I enjoy every single day with my team, because I feel like I am good at what I am doing and I am surrounded by great people.
— What is your favourite dish on the menu?
— My favourite dish on the menu is the yuzu eggs Benedict here at ABC Coffee Roasters, even though I am not eating it too often. I like it because of its beautiful presentation and unique revision of the classic eggs Benedict. I love the combination too.

Von, Kitchen Chef

— What is your favourite part of the day?
— My favourite part of the day is the busy time in the kitchen, because temporarily I forget my own problems in life. I get fully immersed in the process.
— Pros and cons of working in the hospitality industry?
— I like to work in hospitality, because I learn a lot of new dishes and gain new skills. Regarding cons — working in this industry sometimes feels too exhausting.
— How does your day usually go?
— Always with a smile on!
— What is your favourite dish on the menu?
ABC CLUB SANDWICH is my favourite item on our menu. It is so simple and so delicious — that is the secret of happiness!

Alina, Service Manager

— What is your favourite part of the day?
— I love our restaurant at busy times. Waiters are smoothly fluttering on the floor, baristas are doing their magic with all these smart devices. And guests are spending their time with friends and family, enjoying their brunch and a conversation, making a hum of voices which feels like a small busy hive. I love it!
— Pros and cons of working in the hospitality industry?
— I definitely like to meet new people! And you never know if it is your future soulmate, famous actor or coffee roasting world champion standing in front of you. It is like you are unwrapping a Christmas gift six times a week!
My least favourite thing is to deal with a situation when someone from your team is quitting. The hospitality community is very friendly, and it feels like home, so losing someone is painful.
— How does your day usually go?
— I do have my rituals. A cup of coffee in the morning is a must! 7 years in the coffee industry made me addicted to it, but it is under control already [laughs]. After so many years in — the sea is knee-deep.
— What is your favourite dish on the menu?
— As I am trying to control my meal plan and go with something healthy, I prefer items that can give both energy, macros, and joy. Now my heart belongs to a quinoa bowl with salmon, seaweed, broccoli and greens. The ginger dressing is just a cherry on top!
