Everyone Is Obsessed With Embossed Leather. But How Do You Choose And Style It?

2 Dec 2024

Reptile skins have long held a coveted place in fashion. Once regarded as rare symbols of status and exclusivity, available only to a select few, these exotic patterns are now accessible to a wider audience, appearing on everything from printed fabrics to embossed leather that convincingly mimic the look of snake, crocodile, or lizard skin. What began as a trend has evolved into a timeless wardrobe staple, proving that those wild textures are here to stay. But how do you choose the right reptile-inspired pieces and style them effectively? Let us explore the ins and outs!

A conscious choice

When it comes to reptile skins and their lookalikes, we usually come across three types of leather, each with its own pros and cons that make you think twice before making a choice. No greenwashing or judging here — just good old-fashioned awareness to help you figure out where you stand on the ethical fashion spectrum.

While genuine exotic leathers have a certain allure, they come with significant ethical and ecological concerns, prompting some major fashion brands to ban them altogether. And if you do manage to find an ethically sourced piece, be prepared for a hefty price tag!

On the other hand, we have faux leather, crafted to look and feel like the real deal without any ethical worries. This option is generally easier to care for and kinder to your wallet. But is the “eco-leather” label truly deserved? In some cases, particularly with plant-based materials, the answer is yes — but those are still in the minority. While faux leather is cruelty-free, it is not always the most environmentally friendly choice, as many varieties are made from synthetic materials that can contribute to pollution and aren’t biodegradable.

Finally, there is real embossed leather, which can be a bit controversial. On one hand, it raises ethical concerns since it is made from animal skin. On the other hand, it can be viewed as more sustainable because most leathers used in fashion are co-products of the meat industry, helping to reduce waste. Plus, from a consumer perspective, real leather tends to be more durable and age beautifully, making it a worthwhile investment for your wardrobe. Ultimately, the choice comes down to your personal values and priorities.

Styling tips

Now that you know what kind of material you are leaning towards, remember to check the labels and product descriptions when shopping online to ensure you get exactly what you want. Sometimes appearances can be deceiving! And as you dive into your new pieces, I will share some of my favourite styling tips to help you make the most of those embossed looks.

When putting together a look featuring reptile-embossed leather, I like to follow one of two strategies: either make your piece the star of the outfit and let it shine, or style it as if it was a basic piece. Here are some ideas.

Imagine there is no print

At first glance, reptile patterns might seem like bold statement pieces, but they can also serve as a refined foundation that adds subtle depth to your look. Just go for a minimalist, single-colour accessory or clothing piece without flashy details, and style it as if there is no print — let the finish do all the talking!

The same trick works with more active prints too, as long as they are sleek and match your wardrobe’s colour palette. Pair them with streamlined pieces that won’t compete for attention, and you will have a look that is both polished and effortless.

Be bold

If subtlety isn’t your thing, let reptile textures steal the show. Opt for statement pieces like a croc-embossed tote, knee-high snakeskin boots, or a striking textured blazer to transform a simple outfit into a high-impact look.

Pair them with neutral or monochrome basics to keep the focus on those wild textures, or mix in complementary tones for extra flair. Don’t be afraid to be a little extra — after all, isn’t that the whole point?

Embrace denim

There is something about pairing reptile textures with denim that just works, no matter the shade. Try styling embossed leather boots with full-length straight or wide-leg jeans in a matching hue to elongate your silhouette. Or, if you are opting for a bold handbag or statement leather jacket, let your favourite denim bring a relaxed, effortless balance. This textured pairing adds just the right amount of edge without being overwhelming.

Light up the night

Ready to make a statement on a night out? Opt for metallic embossed leather — think silver, gold, or vibrant hues that add a dazzling twist to reptile textures. A shiny croc-embossed clutch or some gold snakeskin heels can instantly elevate your outfit. For an even bolder vibe, pair metallic leather pants or a skirt with simple basics.
