Traditional Emirati clothing for men

The kandura can come in different shades and styles. It is worn to showcase cultural pride and heritage and is suitable for special occasions and everyday life. It reflects the region's traditional values and customs.

In the past, the kandura was a simple, ankle-length garment with long sleeves. However, modern variations have modified collars, sleeve length, and overall fit. Some kanduras may even have embroidery or embellishments for an elegant touch. However, it remains a potent symbol of Emirati identity and culture.

Traditional Emirati clothing for women

Women in the United Arab Emirates traditionally wear an abaya, a black, loose-fitting cloak covering the entire body. Typically, the abaya is adorned with intricate embroidery or embellishments. Women also wear a headscarf, the Shayla, draped over the head and shoulders.

In recent times, there has been a surge in creative designs for the abaya. From unique cuts and patterns to intricate embroidery, designers are adding a modern twist to this iconic garment. Brands like Serrb, Ahlam Shahin, and almraikn have all added modern twists and colours to the original abaya.

These traditional Emirati clothes are not only a symbol of national identity but also reflect Emirati values of modesty, elegance, and cultural heritage.

Traditional accessories for men

A few traditional accessories are commonly worn with the kandura to complete the Emirati look. One of these accessories is called the "agal". It is a black cord worn on top of the ghutra, the head covering, to keep it in place. The agal adds a touch of elegance to the overall outfit.

The "khanjar" is a traditional curved dagger worn on a belt called the "izār". It holds cultural significance and is seen as a symbol of honour and courage. This accessory is commonly seen during special occasions and ceremonies.

In addition to the agal and khanjar, other accessories worn with the kandura include traditional footwear such as the "Nahla". These are slip-on shoes made from leather or fabric that are comfortable and complement the overall traditional attire.

Traditional accessories for women

In the UAE, it is expected to wear traditional accessories with the abaya. One such accessory is the "Sheyla" or "Shayla", a headscarf many Emirati women wear when out in public. The sheyla is generally made of lightweight fabric and can be styled in various ways.

Another accessory that complements the abaya is the "niqab". The niqab is a face veil that covers the lower part of the face, leaving only the eyes visible. While some Emirati women wear it as a personal choice, others do not.

Emirati women often wear traditional jewellery, such as "hijab pins" and "brooches", to secure the sheyla or add sparkle to the abaya. These accessories can be adorned with precious stones or intricate designs, reflecting Emirati craftsmanship. The abaya is often beautifully embellished with embroidery, sequins, or other decorative elements, making it a statement piece.

Underneath the kandura and abaya, people usually wear regular everyday clothes, just like you would with any other outfit. It is common to wear a simple shirt, blouse, pants, or a skirt. The kandura and abaya are outer garments worn on top of regular clothes to provide modesty and cultural identity.
