Head to the Al Bithnah Fort, situated 13.5 kilometres northwest of Fujairah city. Al Bithnah Fort is a testament to the UAE's history and cultural heritage. This ancient fortress, dating back to 1735, is a treasure trove of historical significance and architectural brilliance.

Perched atop a flat terrace overlooking Wadi Ham, Al Bithnah Fort protected the inland route to Fujairah, safeguarding the village and its residents from invaders. The fort's strategic location allowed locals to monitor and defend against attacks, aided by nearby watchtowers.

Built in traditional Arab style, this rectangular fort features two round corner towers, a guard's room, and intricate wooden doors. Following rigorous restoration in 2012, the fort's preservation beautifully showcases its original grandeur.

Al Bithnah Fort played a pivotal role in Fujairah's declaration as a de facto independent state, led by Sheikh Hammad Bin Abdullah Al Sharqi. The fort's cultural and political significance makes it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and travellers alike.

Travel to Al Bidyah Mosque: A 1000-year-old UAE gem

Walk through time at Al Bidyah Mosque, a stunning 1000-year-old one more treasure in Fujairah awaits. Discovered in 2018, researchers estimate that builders constructed this ancient mosque, the oldest still standing in the UAE, in the 15th century.

Al Bidyah Mosque boasts an extraordinary design, distinguished by four unequal-sized domes, each comprising multiple domes stacked upon one another. The central pillar supports these intricate domes, showcasing exceptional engineering expertise. The mosque's square shape, irregular walls, and decorative dentate carvings make it a true architectural gem.

Experts estimate the mosque's construction was between 1450 and 1670 AD. Numerous archaeological sites surround the mosque, including watchtowers, stone walls, and ancient house foundations. Petroglyphs and carvings on stones nearby offer a fascinating glimpse into the region's past.

UNESCO's Tentative Lists include Al Bidyah Mosque as a landmark of special archaeological importance due to its significance. Its unique historical significance and Ottoman influence make it an exceptional example of human creativity and cultural exchange.

Conquer the historic Dhaya Fort in Ras Al Khaimah: A traveller's delight

Are you still eager to uncover a few more mysteries of the UAE's history? Your quest concludes here, at Dhaya Fort, the sole surviving hill fort in the United Arab Emirates. Perched atop a 70-meter-high hill in Ras Al Khaimah, this ancient fortress offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into the region's fascinating history.

Dhaya Fort witnessed the fierce 1819 battle between British troops and local Qawasim tribes. This significant historical monument, dating back to the Late Bronze Age (1600-1300 BC), has been beautifully restored to its former glory.

As you climb the 239 zigzagging steps, you will discover the twin-peaked golden mud-brick fortress built during the 19th century. The views from the top are simply astonishing – lush date palm gardens, the Jebel Jais mountains, and even neighbouring Oman.

At the base of the fort lies 12 large Wadi Suq tombs, dating back to 2,000-1,300 BC. Four excavated tombs reveal impressive Southeast Arabia funerary structures. 

Before you venture on your adventure, note that the climb can be uneven and rocky. Visit during daylight hours, as there is no lighting, and be prepared for a thrilling yet challenging ascent.
