Chris Martin, lead singer and co-founder of Coldplay, is known for his quirky outfits – or should I say outfit. The man has sported all possible variations of the same look for the past two decades. Why is that? Keep on reading… we are solving this mystery!
The Chris Martin’s style guide
Based on my research, September 2005 marked the beginning of an evolution in the Coldplay star’s fashion identity. Prior to that, Chris used to sport a casual all black look. On an eventful September day, he rocked a black T-shirt that had a subtle tie-dye effect and a rainbow stripe on the side. It quickly evolved into the tie-dye-mania which became synonymous with him. So before moving forward, here is a quick breakdown of Chris’ classic outfit.
Essentially, it includes a bold tie-dye t-shirt, with colorful patches occasionally, layered over a long-sleeved undershirt, black or white, worn with a pair of tight black jeans and a pair of sneakers, both having kaleidoscopic patterns made by the bright colors of the rainbow. His go-to accessories are a beanie, stacks of beaded bracelets and chains on his side, from time to time.
Technically speaking, Chris’ mix and match consists in integrating specific elements from different styles and aesthetics into his unique look. He borrowed tie-dye from the hippie movement; half and long sleeve layering from scene; beanies from grunge; and chains from metal heads. I will put the skinny jeans on the back of the bad fashion choices we have all made in the 2010s. Luckily, some of us managed to get over it!
There are several theories floating online regarding his clothing choices. Some argue that Chris Martin created this look to be in tune with Coldplay’s cover albums, which heavily feature the rainbow or its colors. I believed it to be a credible explanation, until I stumbled on his recent interview with Ryan Seacrest.
Taking refuge in a uniform
In the above-mentioned interview, Chris stated: “I don’t feel nervous on stage, if I have the right shoes on. I was talking the other day with someone, and yes, there are certain outfits I can’t go on stage in. These outfits make me nervous […] I could never perform in shorts for example.” This simple yet honest answer puts everything into perspective.
It is easy to forget that the Coldplay star takes part in world tours that can last up to more than six months. Performing live in front of millions of fans, being constantly under the camera lights, and globetrotting can be quite challenging. The pressure is real. If he clothes himself in a certain manner to give himself a sense of security and serenity, become less nervous and boost his confidence, then be it! After all, he is not the first nor will he be the last celebrity to wear the same attire regularly. For example, Steve Jobs donned the same black turtleneck and blue jeans. Christopher Nolan is known for wearing a shirt, a button-up vest and a black blazer. Last but not least, Karl Lagerfeld wore the same outfit every day: white shirt with a black suit, tie, gloves and sunglasses.
To understand why these wealthy celebrities have a “simplistic” style, I turned to fashion psychology in search of answers. It tuns out that they limit their options by choice. They dress in a certain way to alleviate negative emotions, improve their wellbeing, and increase their inner confidence. In short, they don’t see clothes as fashionable items, but a medium to improve their positivity. It is all about personal associations. There is a scientific reasoning behind wearing what makes each and every one of us feel good. It is commonly known as “dopamine dressing”. So, why change what is working for us and making us happy?

A strong personal brand
If I throw a costume party and ask you to come dressed like Chris Martin, you all know how to show up. Anytime, anywhere, you know what to expect from Chris! In a way his trademark look transcends the psychological support. It became an integral part of his marketing strategy. He can be called all these names online, meanwhile, I call it having a personal style, and thus a strong personal brand.
The British musician personal brand is especially interesting since it is in complete harmony with the band’s values. Tie-dye, rainbow, hearts and colors are symbols of love and positivity. Anyone who has been to a Coldplay concert experienced the band’s affection for their fans and the closeness among the attendees. Moreover, the messages of hope, kindness, compassion and togetherness are always emphasized throughout the song lyrics.
Lastly, one can only salute Chris Martin for tuning the outside noise out. Critics can be found everywhere. They can be family members, close friends or complete strangers. Society gets easily annoyed by and judgmental of those who dismiss its “codes“ (well, try to defy its “norms” first) and dress “unconventionally”. Whether it is going out for a quick walk down the coffee shop or attending the prestigious Grammys, Chris has managed to put societal pressures aside, and stay true to what makes him at ease. There is such a deep inner power to that.
So, now that the case is closed. Will you still question Chris’ fashion sense or actually go ahead and start curating your personal style?
