Frankie Knuckles was an American DJ and producer who began his career in New York, but truly came into his own after moving to Chicago.
If we were to put it plainly, we would say he developed a sound that blended disco, soul, and early electronic elements. But if we are being honest — and a little more direct — he was the one who gave us house music.
So how did that actually happen?
After moving to Chicago, he became the resident DJ at a club called The Warehouse — and that is where everything shifted. Disco was fading, and he was simply trying to keep people on the dancefloor. But in doing so, he began shaping something entirely new.
He extended tracks, layered drum machines and synths, and built a deeper, more hypnotic groove — something that felt less like a collection of songs and more like a continuous flow. House didn’t arrive as a clean break; it emerged gradually, transforming disco rather than replacing it.
In many ways, he was just doing his job. But without that instinct, there wouldn’t just be no house — there would be no techno, no deep house, no garage, and arguably no parts of modern pop or EDM as we know them today.
With that in mind, the playlist you are about to hear might land a little differently. Enjoy.
