We are continuing our dive into the world's biggest music festivals, and today our radar turns to another major European celebration: Fête de la Musique (literally, Music Day), the French festival that takes over streets across the country every 21 June. If there is one day to understand what France sounds like, this is probably it. So we are putting the croissants, pain au chocolat and postcard clichés to one side, and letting the music do the talking.
Much like the festival itself, this playlist refuses to stay in one corner of French music. Instead, it embraces the same spirit that makes Fête de la Musique so special: eclectic, unexpected and open to everyone. What are its core principles?
- The first is diversity. Fête de la Musique has never been about a single genre. Electronic music sits alongside jazz, rock, hip-hop, classical, African music, and folk, and this playlist follows the same path — from the dreamy electronica of Air to the Malian blues of Amadou & Mariam, the explosive electro of Justice, and the indie pop of Clara Luciani.
- The second is its balance between generations. Fête de la Musique has always brought established artists and rising talent onto the same stages, giving both equal space. This playlist reflects that spirit by pairing pioneers such as Air and Justice with more recent names including Cezaire and Clara Luciani.
- And finally, it celebrates music that has become part of France's cultural identity. Many of these tracks are considered modern classics. D.A.N.C.E. by Justice helped define the French electronic movement, La femme d'argent by Air remains one of the country's most influential electronic compositions, while La grenade by Clara Luciani became one of the biggest French-language hits of the late 2010s.
