Here is an honest confession: The Sandy Times Creative Director Kito Jempere is obsessed with Weezer. And with the premiere of the Gold Album, he couldn't exactly let the occasion pass. So here we are, with a playlist that tells the story of the American rock band in just under an hour.
This isn't a playlist built around the obvious hits. There is no Buddy Holly, Say It Ain't So or Island in the Sun. And that is exactly what makes it feel less like a Greatest Hits collection and more like a personal take on the band and its history.
In fact, the playlist doesn't even open with Weezer. It starts with their cover of the Pixies' Velouria — a fitting introduction, considering the influence Pixies had on the alternative-rock world Weezer emerged from. Then comes Undone – The Sweater Song, the band's debut single from 1994, before the story moves on to Pinkerton.
The Good Life, Pink Triangle and El Scorcho all come from the 1996 album — and for good reason. Pinkerton remains one of the defining moments in Weezer's history: rawer, more personal and far less comfortable than the polished success of the Blue Album that came before it.
It also marks a useful turning point. From there, the playlist follows Weezer through their different eras — disappearing from view, making their long-awaited return and becoming something slightly different several times over. In one hour, you get a surprisingly complete history of the band.
So, if you came for a standard Best of Weezer, you have taken a wrong turn. If you want the stranger, messier version of the story — the one told by someone who has clearly spent far too much time listening — press play.
