We are back with David Harks and Amity Agora, and this time, he isn’t simply bringing us 13 carefully chosen tracks — there is a whole story running through them.
The title gives us the first clue. Blush Response borrows its name from Vangelis’ Blade Runner soundtrack — fitting for an episode that plays with the increasingly blurry line between human and machine. For those unfamiliar with the film, its replicants look and act human, but more importantly, they feel like humans too.
David picks up that same tension here, filling the hour with synthesisers, electronics, droids and flashes of retrofuturism, while keeping its heart somewhere unmistakably human. Across 13 tracks, we move through love, loneliness, grief, tenderness and anxiety — all the messy, deeply felt things that technology might imitate, but never quite experience.
The choice of artists matters here too — a deliberately eclectic mix. Harks is pointedly after unique voices; he isn’t chasing polished, perfect sound, but the individuality of the human behind the music. Cassandra Jenkins brings an almost conversational, reportage-like delivery; The Broadway Project makes music grown out of lived grief; Hugo Santini offers something soft, almost intimate in its emotion.
So here it is — a look at the interaction between machine and human, at the uncanniness of technology set against the one truth only people can actually feel.
