Choose The Best Backpack For Your Hiking Adventures

This author grew up taking hikes in the mountains of Hatta, so believe me when I say, I have some authority on the subject. I’m also a complete nerd for all things load-bearing. The right backpack can make or break your trip. Choose one that is too small, and you will constantly struggle to fit your gear and food. My last trip, though not a hiking adventure, had me facing this exact problem, and trust me, it is not fun. Opt for a bag that is too large, and you will likely overpack, leading to unnecessary weight. If your backpack doesn't fit your torso properly, you risk discomfort or even injury.

It is no surprise that backpackers place so much importance on finding the right pack — it is the cornerstone of the activity!

Choosing the right backpack

With an increasing number of ultralight backpacks available, from well-known brands like Gossamer Gear, and Direct Action to small, independent makers crafting UL packs by hand, there is no shortage of options.

While having choices is great, it can also be overwhelming. How do you pick the perfect ultralight pack for your thru-hiking, backpacking, or fastpacking adventures?

Here are some general guidelines people smarter than this author have come up with, and I tend to follow them as well:

  • If you are taking a day hike, choose a backpack between 15 and 30 litres.
  • Anything larger is suitable for overnight or multi-day trips.
  • Ensure that your pack is weather resistant and durable. Nothing is worse than being caught in a sudden downpour or sweating through your backpack.
  • Carry only what you need.

You can probably tell that there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to choosing a backpack, especially if you plan on carrying specialised or sports equipment. That said, here are the best packs you can choose for your adventures.

The one backpack to rule them all

If I had to pick one, just one backpack for everything, the one I’d choose is the Direct Action Dragon Egg. How cool is that name? This backpack is chock full of features and can accommodate almost any of your adventuring needs. It features laser-cut slots with a MOLLE/PALS system, offering versatile attachment options for increased customisation. The main compartment includes an internal mesh and a hydration pocket, while an additional zippered compartment at the back can hold a hydration bladder or accommodate a laptop up to 15 inches. It has a paracord pull handle with two 2.5m cords, side handles, quick-release shoulder straps, and D-ring attachment points. The contoured shoulder straps and removable waist belt provide comfort, with lightweight shoulder straps also included. The pack has a capacity of 30 litres, measures 22" x 31" x 49", and weighs 2.2 kg. The Dragon Egg oozes quality and is built to take a beating. It was made with military use in mind, so believe you me, it can take just about anything you can throw at it.

The other top backpack

The Granite Gear Blaze 60 remains a top choice for backpacking among the professional and amateur hiking communities, thanks to its exceptional design. The latest version of this model weighs in at just 3.0 pounds. This backpack can comfortably support up to 50 pounds, making it a standout in both weight and capacity. This author was impressed by its practical and user-friendly features, including a stretchy mesh front pocket, spacious hip belt pockets, a removable top lid, a breathable back panel, a long front access zipper, and nine compression straps to manage varying loads. This backpack offers everything you could need without any unnecessary extras. Its lightweight build allows for a low base weight, but the Blaze’s strong suspension system means you can easily carry luxury items, winter or climbing gear, or extra food for longer trips.

The super comfy backpack

This author is a big fan of the Osprey Atmos AG 65, which I consider one of the best all-around backpacking backpacks that you can backpack with. How is that for a tongue-twister?

With its impressive design and features, this pack offers outstanding back ventilation while weighing just 4.5 pounds. It is no wonder the Atmos AG 65 has developed a loyal following. The standout feature of this pack is Osprey's innovative anti-gravity (AG) suspension system, which distributes the load evenly across your hips and shoulders, while also providing excellent ventilation to prevent heat buildup behind your back and under the hip belt. The plush, tapered, breathable foam shoulder straps add to the comfort, making them a dream to wear. For typical trips with loads up to 40 pounds, this is one of the most comfortable backpacks money can buy. Every pocket is thoughtfully placed and perfectly sized. Additionally, the Atmos AG 65 offers an excellent fit with easily adjustable features focused on ergonomics, ensuring you stay comfortable on the trail.

The best lightweight backpack

The Gossamer Gear Mariposa has consistently been one of the best ultralight backpacks for years, thanks to its impressive balance of lightweight design and comfort — something most backpacks struggle to achieve. It offers a thoughtful array of features, providing plenty of options for carrying extra gear on the outside without adding unnecessary weight. One standout feature is its external stretch mesh back pocket, this author’s favourite among ultralight packs, which is spacious enough to store snacks, extra layers, and other essentials for quick access. The main compartment is roomy enough to fit a full-sized bear canister horizontally, a rare capability for an ultralight pack. Additionally, the Mariposa can be compressed for smaller loads, making it versatile for various trips. Crafted from durable and lightweight materials, this backpack is built to withstand challenging conditions, whether you are bushwhacking, navigating talus fields, or exploring wherever the trail leads.
