When Action Becomes Chaos: Learning To Pause When Everything Feels Urgent

When the world suddenly becomes unstable, humans develop an almost irresistible urge to act.

Buy tickets. Change flights. Check airport boards. Call airlines. Refresh the news. Monitor maps. Prepare contingency plans for every possible scenario. Stock supplies. Move quickly. Move somewhere safer. Move somewhere familiar. Move anywhere that feels more stable than the present moment.

The instinct is understandable. Uncertainty triggers one of the most uncomfortable psychological states the human brain can experience. When we can't predict outcomes, the brain begins searching for ways to regain control — even if the control is mostly imaginary.

Psychologists call this behaviour action bias.

In uncertain situations people often prefer taking action over doing nothing, even when the action itself doesn't meaningfully improve the outcome. Studies in behavioural science show that acting gives the brain a temporary feeling of control, which reduces anxiety in the short term. But constant action can also create cognitive overload, increasing exhaustion and emotional instability.

The paradox is that what feels productive can sometimes be the very thing that deepens stress.

Over the past few days I experienced that dynamic almost perfectly.

After several days of travel disruptions and changing schedules, I had to fight simply for the right to fly from San Juan to Madrid after my original connection from Madrid to Dubai was cancelled. The airline wanted me to prove somehow that I am not planning to stay in Spain for the rest of my life. What a delusional assumption, when you are talking to a person who is a UAE resident. Well, I managed to convince them, and got onboard. That alone felt like a small victory. But arriving in Madrid didn't produce the calm I expected. Instead, the planning instinct intensified.

New flights. Different routes. Alternative airlines. Every possible connection back to Dubai. Constantly refreshing schedules. Calling customer support. Messaging chatbots. Searching for solutions faster than the situation itself could stabilise.

The problem was that the situation kept changing. Flights appeared and disappeared. Schedules shifted. New information contradicted previous information. Every attempt to regain control produced another layer of uncertainty. At some point exhaustion becomes unavoidable.

Cognitive psychologists describe this phenomenon as decision fatigue. When the brain processes too many complex decisions in a short period of time, the quality of those decisions deteriorates. Emotional regulation weakens, frustration rises, and the sense of clarity disappears. Instead of solving the problem, the mind becomes trapped inside it.

This is where stillness becomes unexpectedly powerful. Stillness isn't the absence of action. It is the deliberate refusal to act prematurely.

In situations where variables are changing rapidly — flight schedules, political developments, logistical disruptions — waiting often produces more information than frantic planning. Time itself becomes the most efficient problem-solving tool. And yet waiting is emotionally uncomfortable.

The human nervous system interprets stillness during uncertainty as vulnerability. The instinct is to prepare for every possible outcome: imagine every risk, plan every escape route, anticipate every complication. But when the number of unknown variables is high, those mental simulations rarely produce useful solutions. They simply generate noise. Noise that drains energy and distances you from calm thinking.

Eventually I realised that this was exactly what was happening. Already tired from days of travel and constant logistics, I was exhausting myself further by trying to control a situation that clearly refused to be controlled.

The only rational response left was to stop. Stop searching for flights every fifteen minutes. Stop calling airlines that were already overwhelmed. Stop treating every new piece of information as urgent.

Instead: rest. Eat properly. Sleep. Allow the nervous system to stabilise. Give the situation time to develop before making the next decision.

From the outside this choice looks passive. In reality it requires discipline.

Stillness is difficult precisely because it contradicts instinct. It requires trusting that not every problem improves through immediate action. Sometimes clarity emerges only after the noise settles.

This doesn't mean ignoring reality or refusing to adapt. It means recognising the difference between meaningful action and frantic activity. The first solves problems. The second multiplies them.

In moments of uncertainty the simplest behaviours often become the hardest ones to practice. Breathing slowly. Sitting down. Accepting that the timeline isn't fully under your control.

But those behaviours are often the most stabilising ones available.

The world doesn't always reward speed. Sometimes it rewards patience.

And sometimes the most intelligent move is the one that feels the least productive: to pause, take a breath, and wait until the situation becomes clear enough to move again.
