28 Aug 2024
Emirati Women’s Day, celebrated annually on August 28th, is a significant event that honours women's achievements, contributions, and progress in the United Arab Emirates. Unlike International Women’s Day, which is celebrated globally on March 8th, Emirati Women’s Day has its unique significance tied to the UAE's culture, history, and vision for the future. Let's learn more about it.
How did it appear?
Emirati Women’s Day was first celebrated in 2015, an initiative launched by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, also known as the Mother of the Nation. Sheikha Fatima, a staunch advocate for women’s rights and empowerment, established this day to acknowledge the crucial role of women in the UAE’s development and to inspire future generations to continue the legacy of progress.
The date, August 28th, was chosen because it marks the anniversary of the founding of the General Women’s Union (GWU) in 1975, an organisation that has played a pivotal role in advancing the status of women in the UAE. The GWU, under Sheikha Fatima’s leadership, has worked tirelessly to implement policies and programs that promote gender equality, education, health, and social welfare for women in the Emirates.
Why is it separate from International Women’s Day?
While International Women’s Day is a global celebration of women’s achievements, Emirati Women’s Day is particularly focused on the unique journey and contributions of women in the UAE. It recognises the distinct cultural, social, and economic contexts in which Emirati women operate and emphasises the progress made within the nation. This separate celebration allows the UAE to highlight its specific achievements and challenges regarding women’s empowerment, as well as to showcase the leadership of Emirati women.
New theme every year: What is the theme for 2024?
Each year, a new theme is chosen for Emirati Women’s Day to spotlight various aspects of women's roles and achievements.
H.H. Sheikha Fatima said: “Every year, we proudly announce an inspiring theme for Emirati Women’s Day, and this national occasion is a priority for us. This day highlights a set of objectives which aligns with the country’s global leadership in recognising and empowering women.”
For example, in 2022, the theme was “Inspiring Reality… Sustainable Future,” which highlighted the UAE’s progress in empowering women and promoting their image while continuing to develop their potential.
In 2023, the theme was “We Collaborate for Tomorrow,” aligning with the UAE’s Year of Sustainability and focusing on the nation’s dedication to sustainability and innovative solutions.
This year, the theme is “We Share for Tomorrow,” emphasising the UAE’s commitment to collective progress and involving all segments of society in achieving its vision.
