Oman is close enough for a long weekend, and driving from the UAE to Oman is the part of the trip people worry about most unnecessarily. A UAE to Oman by car run means mountains, a different coastline and empty roads within a few hours of leaving home. The admin is the only real obstacle, and it is bureaucratic rather than difficult: a visa that depends on your passport, insurance that extends over the border and the right papers for the car. Here is what a UAE to Oman by car trip actually needs, from which crossing to pick to what you hand over at the counter.
UAE to Oman by car: What the drive involves
Going from the UAE to Oman by car is the sort of trip you can decide on a Wednesday and start on a Thursday night, which is a large part of the appeal. Muscat sits about 450km from Dubai and takes four to five hours of actual driving, before the border. The Hatta crossing is roughly an hour and twenty minutes from Dubai, about 134km, so the first leg barely counts as a journey. Dubai to Muscat by car is therefore a comfortable one-day run with time left over at the other end, and Dubai to Oman by car is the version most people here do first.
An Oman road trip from the UAE isn't only about distance, though. The scenery changes the moment you are through: wadis, camels at the roadside, the Hajar range in the windscreen. What slows you down is paperwork, and driving from the UAE to Oman gets considerably easier the second time, because the paperwork is identical every trip.

Which border to use from UAE to Oman
Deciding which border to use from UAE to Oman comes down to where you are headed rather than where you live. Hatta, which meets Al Wajajah on the Omani side, is the usual choice for Muscat and the one explicitly open to tourists, UAE residents and GCC nationals. Khatmat Malaha, reached through Kalba, drops you on the Batinah coast for Sohar. Mezyad, through Al Ain, points towards central Oman. For Musandam there are two options: Dibba from the Fujairah side, and the crossing at the northern tip of Ras Al Khaimah, which you will see called both Al Darah and Tibat.
Check which border to use from UAE to Oman before you commit to a route, and confirm the post you have picked is open to you. Turning around at a border with a boot full of camping gear is a particular kind of misery.

Oman visa requirements for UAE residents
The Oman visa requirements for UAE residents start with your passport rather than your residency. GCC citizens need no visa. Nationals of more than 100 countries can enter for up to 14 days without one, provided their passport has at least six months left and they can show onward travel, confirmed accommodation, health insurance and enough money for the stay. That 14-day stay can't be extended or converted into anything else.
A second group of nationalities qualifies for the same exemption only with a residence permit from a GCC country or a valid visa for the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan or a Schengen state. If none of that applies, you need an eVisa, which starts from OMR 5, around Dh50. Apply at least five days ahead, because processing is usually quick but not guaranteed, and an unprocessed application means paying again. One quirk of the Oman visa requirements for UAE residents is that the GCC-residence route depends on the profession on your Emirates ID appearing on Oman's approved list.

What do I need to enter Oman by car?
Documents needed to drive from UAE to Oman
The documents needed to drive from UAE to Oman are easy to assemble and easy to forget. Passports for everyone, with six months of validity and a blank page or two. Emirates ID. Your UAE driving licence, which is accepted for the visit. Keep the lot in one folder in the glovebox rather than scattered through three bags.
UAE Oman border crossing requirements for the car
The vehicle has its own UAE-Oman border crossing requirements. Bring the original registration card, not a photo of it. So what do I need to enter Oman by car that isn't registered in my name? A no objection certificate from the owner, notarised and translated into Arabic, listing the chassis number, the registration details and your Emirates ID number. If the car is financed, that NOC typically comes from your bank, which will want a few working days and may ask for a deposit against the outstanding loan. The UAE-Oman border crossing requirements for a borrowed or financed car are the ones to sort out well before the day you leave.

Oman car insurance at UAE border
Oman car insurance at UAE border posts isn't optional: an Orange Card is required for every vehicle crossing. Start by checking whether your existing policy already extends into Oman, because many comprehensive policies do, and insurers will usually issue the card on request at no extra cost.
If your policy stops at the UAE, you can arrange Oman car insurance at UAE border counters for roughly Dh105 to Dh120 for the minimum five days. That version covers third-party damage only and leaves your own car unprotected, which is worth a thought before you drive mountain roads in it.

Can I take a rental car from UAE to Oman?
Can I take a rental car from UAE to Oman is worth settling when you book rather than at the pick-up desk. It depends on the company, and where the answer is yes, it comes with conditions: written permission and a few days' notice so the paperwork can be arranged. The company issues the NOC and extends the insurance, and charges for the privilege, with the amount depending on the firm and how long the car stays in Oman.
Larger companies with Omani branches tend to handle this as routine. If you are asking can I take a rental car from UAE to Oman at the counter on the morning you leave, the answer will probably be no, so sort it when you book.
How to drive from UAE to Oman: The crossing itself
Knowing how to drive from UAE to Oman in practice means knowing the order of the stops. You clear UAE passport control first, hand over passports and pay the Dh35 exit fee per person, then collect your exit slip and keep it. Omani passport control comes next, where you either present a pre-approved visa or apply at the counter, and where the fee at Hatta is payable by card rather than cash. Then customs, where officers will ask you to open the doors and the boot, and are thorough about it.
Phones stay in the car, because photographs aren't allowed at the border. Once through, fill up at the petrol station just past the Omani side, since there isn't much after it. Omani speed cameras have no tolerance built in: they go off at the posted limit, so stick to it. That is how to drive from UAE to Oman without a story to tell about it afterwards.

UAE Oman border crossing time and when to go
UAE-Oman border crossing time is the one thing nobody can promise you. The Hatta post runs around the clock, which helps, but long weekends and public holidays mean queues on the approach road and at the counters. Travelling out late on the first night of a break and coming back early on the last avoids the worst of it. The single biggest saving on UAE Oman border crossing time is having your visa approved before you leave home.
Dubai to Muscat by car, and other routes worth the drive
Dubai to Muscat by car is the obvious first trip, and the capital rewards it: the corniche at Muttrah, the fish market, the Royal Opera House. Our 48 hours in Oman itinerary is built for exactly this kind of weekend, and there is more in our guide to a weekend in Oman.
Point the car elsewhere and an Oman road trip from the UAE looks different again. The Hajar mountains are within reach of the Al Ain crossing, and the cooler months are the right time for the trails in our round-up of hiking in Oman. Musandam is the shortest hop of all, and if the water is the point, the Daymaniyat Islands are worth the detour. Dubai to Oman by car opens up all of it.

Planning your first UAE to Oman by car trip
Asked plainly, what do I need to enter Oman by car? The right visa for your passport, an Orange Card, the original mulkiya, an NOC if the car isn't yours, and Dh35 for the exit fee. Sorting the visa and the insurance at home and the rest is a formality, and an Oman road trip from UAE stops feeling like a project. The documents needed to drive from UAE to Oman fit in one envelope.
Going from Dubai to Oman by car for the first time feels like an administrative exercise. By the second trip it is just a drive, and a good one, which is the real argument for going from the UAE to Oman by car at all. Anyone weighing a UAE to Oman by car weekend should treat the first crossing as the cost of entry and every trip after it as the reason to keep going back.
