Over the past decade, the United Arab Emirates has emerged as a vibrant cultural hub, transcending its traditional economic profile dominated by oil and trade. The nation's strategic investment in art and culture has repositioned it on the global stage, drawing attention from art aficionados, collectors, and critics worldwide. This transformation is largely attributed to major art events such as Art Dubai, Abu Dhabi Art, and the Sharjah Biennial, along with new influential participants like Nomad Abu Dhabi, Art Basel in Qatar, and Frieze. Together, these entities have been pivotal in shifting the perception of the UAE from a regional player to a significant cultural node and crossroads in the art world.

Established in 2007, Art Dubai has grown to become a major one of the most globally recognised major art fairs, attracting a diverse array of galleries, artists, and visitors from all continents. This annual event serves as a confluence where East meets West, providing a platform not only for established international artists but also for emerging talents from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia region.

Art Dubai's impact lies in its inclusivity and diversity. By showcasing contemporary works that address global issues through a regional lens, it has managed to highlight the UAE's position as a melting pot of cultures. The fair's commitment to fostering intercultural dialogue has not only enhanced the UAE's cultural relevance but has also encouraged cultural tourism, bringing significant economic benefits to the region.

Launched in 2009, Abu Dhabi Art has played a crucial role in establishing the UAE as a vibrant cultural destination. This art fair is unique in its holistic approach that combines contemporary art with enriching cultural programs. Through exhibitions, workshops, and interactive sessions, Abu Dhabi Art offers a dynamic platform that bridges traditional art forms with modern expressions.

The gallery participated in this year’s edition of the fair (the last time before becoming Frieze in 2026) and we could feel the excitement around all the art related initiatives in and around Abu Dhabi. Discussions on our booth quickly grew from what we had on this display, to a broader exchange about upcoming museums openings and how suddenly Abu Dhabi had strengthened their positioning within the global art scene.

The Sharjah Biennial, inaugurated in 1993 and redefined in 2003, has been instrumental in championing contemporary art practices in the UAE. Celebrated for its avant-garde exhibitions and installations, the Biennial challenges conventional narratives and inspires critical discourse.

Over the years, the Sharjah Biennial has established itself as a catalyst for contemporary art, fostering innovation and creativity. By nurturing emerging talents and curating groundbreaking exhibitions, the Biennial has successfully repositioned the UAE as a forward-looking cultural powerhouse.

The introduction of Nomad Abu Dhabi, Art Basel Qatar, and Frieze’s involvement with Abu Dhabi Art has further expanded the UAE's cultural canvas. Nomad Abu Dhabi, known for its bespoke approach to art fairs, brings a unique dimension to the local scene by focusing on site-specific works that engage with the UAE’s diverse landscapes. Art Basel’s presence in Qatar complements the regional art ecosystem, drawing global attention to the Gulf as an integrated, culturally rich region.

Frieze’s interest in Abu Dhabi Art acts as a powerful endorsement of the region’s growing stature. Their expertise in handling prominent international art fairs infuses new energy and perspective, driving further engagement from global audiences and stakeholders.
